Liao Yunzhou is a native of Liao Jiawan, Fengtai, Anhui, born in 1903, formerly known as Liao Guanzhou. Liao Yunzhou was very smart, and was admitted to the Whampoa Military Academy at the age of 23. During his time at school, he became acquainted with Jing Dakang. On Jing Dakang's recommendation, Liao Yunzhou secretly joined the Communist Party. In July 1927, after graduating from the military academy, he was assigned to the Second Front of the Nationalist Government as a probationary platoon leader. On August 1 of the same year, the Nanchang Uprising broke out, and Liao Yunzhou joined the rebel forces.
Later, the rebel army was defeated when it went south, and he and his troops were separated. The following year, Liao Yunzhou, under the arrangement of the party organization, went to Shou County, Fuyang and other places to lead the revolutionary movement. After that, he began his own clandestine underground work. In his hometown, Liao Yunzhou established a party branch and led the masses of workers to participate in the strike armed uprising.
Later, Liao Yunzhou hid his identity and became a staff officer of the Kuomintang army. At that time, Liao Yunzhou, as one of the main members of the underground party organization, also secretly planned the Anqing Mutiny. The Northwest Army has high combat effectiveness, and the Party Central Committee unanimously wants to win their joining. In order to develop the party members and progressive forces in the Northwest Army, the Party Central Committee has repeatedly sent cadres to secretly enter the Northwest Army.

In 1930, Liao Yunzhou also came to the 2nd Division of the Northwest Army established by Feng Yuxiang under the arrangement of the party organization, and established an underground party organization. Later, because of the reorganization of the troops, it was difficult for the underground organization to develop, and Liao Yunzhou only went to contact the Party Central Committee. However, with the efforts of Liao Yunzhou, the Communists and progressive officers who had developed before had become a powerful force.
In 1937, Liao Yunzhou served as the commander of the 738th Regiment of the Independent 46th Brigade. After the Northern Bureau of the Communist Party of China learned of Liao Yunzhou's identity, it conveyed to him a new combat task: to contact the progressive people in the troops and unite all anti-Japanese forces. In this way, Liao Yunzhou became a Communist Party member lurking in the Kuomintang army.
Latent work is full of dangers, but Liao Yunzhou has never regretted it. Later, because of the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Liao Yunzhou's talents were highlighted, and he gradually received heavy responsibilities from his superiors. During the Battle of Taierzhuang, Liao Yunzhou's troops were reorganized into the 656th Regiment of the 328th Brigade of the 110th Division. In the battle, Liao Yunzhou was not afraid of sacrifice, took the lead, and led the troops to make many battle achievements. Soon, Liao Yunzhou was loved by the soldiers.
At the time of the Battle of Wuhan, the Chinese army had already surrounded the Japanese Songpu Division, and the total annihilation of the Japanese army was just around the corner. However, due to the stubborn resistance of the Japanese army, the battle situation was deadlocked. The Japanese did not sit still, and soon they contacted the Japanese troops outside the encirclement and came to support. After receiving the order, this Japanese unit rushed directly to De'an.

Xue Yue, commander of the Ninth Theater of Operations, learned of the arrival of Japanese reinforcements and immediately ordered his troops to the south to block the reinforcements of the Japanese army. At the same time, in order to prevent the battle line from being stretched too long and causing the Japanese army to break through the defensive line, Xue Yue ordered the defenders to begin to shrink and concentrate. At this time, Liao Yunzhou also moved with the troops. At a small pass west of Zhenxi, Liao Yunzhou led his troops to rendezvous with the 328th Brigade.
Liao Yunzhou and the brigade commander Xin Shaoting decided to block a wave of Japanese troops here and slow down their support. Originally, there were Kuomintang troops stationed here, but unexpectedly, when they learned that the Japanese army had come to reinforce, this unit actually fled without a fight and abandoned the favorable terrain. Not only that, but the ammunition stored here was also left in place by them. Liao Yunzhou was very angry and felt a little lucky. Fortunately, he led his troops to arrive, otherwise the weapons and equipment would fall into the hands of the Japanese army.
Xin Shaoting transferred 4 mortars from his troops to Liao Yunzhou, who quickly began to arrange ambush battles. Because of the abundance of ammunition, the warriors were in control. Everyone was gearing up and waiting for the arrival of the Japanese army. In the evening, the Japanese vanguard finally appeared. They swaggered into the ambush circle that the warriors had prepared.
With liao yunzhou's gunshots, the fighters quickly began to fight back. A total of 12 artillery pieces fired one shell after another at the Japanese. Suddenly, the sound of explosions was incessant, and the ground beneath his feet seemed to be trembling. There was a tank in the Japanese army, but at this time this behemoth, paralyzed in place by the contribution of the shells, blocked the way for the Japanese to advance.

The fighters, in a fit of rage, fired shells into the convoy behind them. The Japanese army was angry and wanted to fight back, but they could not even see the shadow of the soldiers, and could only blindly shoot at the roadside in vain. In this battle, Liao Yunzhou and his soldiers blew up more than 20 Japanese tanks and more than 10 cars. With a record of zero casualties, hundreds of Japanese troops were killed.
The Japanese division was dragged by a regiment led by Liao Yunzhou for a whole day. The Japanese convoy suffered heavy losses and had to rest in place. This ambush made Liao Yunzhou's name known to everyone, and the Nationalist government specially rewarded Liao Yunzhou. In this way, relying on his own talents, Liao Yun gradually became the commander of the 110th Division from a small officer, which also provided favorable conditions for his future uprising.

Although the suspicion was lifted, Liao Yunzhou did not dare to take it lightly. In his future activities, he was more cautious and careful. In 1942, Liao Yunzhou was promoted to commander of the 110th Division.
After the end of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Liao Yunzhou wanted to restore his identity and become a true Communist Party member. The party organization also began to plan a suitable time for him. During this period, Liao Yunzhou also secretly sent the Kuomintang civil war plan he had quietly copied to the Party Central Committee. It has provided great help to our army in dealing with the Conspiracy of the Kuomintang.
In 1946, Liao Yunzhou and the organization consulted, originally planned to lead troops to a peaceful uprising, but the sudden appointment disrupted the plan. Chiang Kai-shek ordered Liao Yunzhou's 110th Division to go to Shandong. In desperation, Liao Yunzhou could only temporarily abandon the plan. The party organization believes that in such a turbulent moment, it is not the best time to choose an uprising. Therefore, Liao Yunzhou could only continue to lurk in the nationalist troops and collect intelligence for our party.
After the 110th Division was transferred to Shandong, the Party Central Committee decided to establish an underground Party Committee of the 110th Division, with Liao Yunzhou as Party Secretary. In view of the war situation at this time, intelligence work was particularly important, so the burden on Liao Yunzhou's body was increased again. But Liao Yunzhou did not have half a complaint, but worked more actively. With the help of underground party committees, a lot of important political and military information was passed on.
In order to make it easier to work in the 110th Division, Liao Yunzhou also deliberately "recommended" some of the Kuomintang diehards in the 110th Division to others and let them be transferred. However, Chiang Kai-shek has always been suspicious, and he is even more uneasy about this kind of "miscellaneous army." Therefore, Chiang Kai-shek often organized some "people's service teams" and let them monitor the troops.
These "people's service teams" are actually the secret service organizations of the Kuomintang. Because they were directly appointed by Chiang Kai-shek, no one could control them, so they had no fear in the army. Naturally, the 110th Division also had the surveillance of the "People's Service Brigade". These people were in the army, randomly beating and cursing soldiers, and the soldiers held their breath in their hearts.
Liao Yunzhou was keenly aware that this was an opportunity to take advantage of. He quietly contacted the Communists in the army and asked them to unite the soldiers against the "People's Service Corps." Wherever the "people's service team" wanted to go, they reported in advance and often opened meals in advance, and these agents did not even have to eat. After a long time, the agent could not stand it and slipped away.
At the same time, Liao Yunzhou also sent some underground party members to the division headquarters to facilitate the collection of intelligence. In order to paralyze his superiors, Liao Yunzhou appointed some trusted but open-minded generals. After many efforts, the 110th Division had a new look, and although there were still a few stubborn generals in it, none of them held important positions, so there was nothing to be afraid of. As the war situation changed, everyone was looking forward to the day of the uprising.
Battle of Huaihai
The opportunity soon came, and in November 1948, the Battle of Huaihai broke out and the Nationalist forces were divided and surrounded. Chiang Kai-shek's plan to retreat south was shattered, and he had to order his troops to go to the Xuzhou area for a decisive battle with the People's Liberation Army. On the third day after the Battle of Huaihai began, Huang Wei's corps began to go to reinforcements. Liao Yunzhou also followed the troops to the Huaihai battlefield.
The Huang Wei Corps was well-equipped, a subordinate unit of Chiang Kai-shek, and had strong combat effectiveness. If the Huang Wei Corps joined the Battle of Huaihai, the situation of the battle was likely to change. Therefore, the Party Central Committee urgently issued instructions to give priority to the annihilation of the Huang Wei Corps and ensure the smooth progress of the Huaihai Campaign.
On November 24, Liao Yunzhou's 85th Army had reached the vicinity of Zhaoji. At this time, Huang Wei led the Kuomintang 12th Corps, and in the process of going to Xuzhou to support, he was surrounded by our army in Shuangduiji. It is reasonable to say that the 12th Corps, with its large numbers and advanced weapons and equipment, could it be so easily surrounded by our army? In the end, it is because of Huang Wei's arrogance.
In the course of the campaign, the People's Liberation Army took the initiative to abandon the behavior of Nanpingji, making Huang Wei believe that the People's Liberation Army had begun to retreat, fearing the strength of the Kuomintang army. This wrong analysis made Huang Wei blinded by pride and complacency. No longer cautious, he ordered the whole army to attack Su County.

However, at this time, the main force of the People's Liberation Army, which was "retreating" in Huang Wei's eyes, had already circled the rear of the 12th Army and cut off their supply lines. By the time Huang Wei reacted, the Platsu army had already occupied Mengcheng, and the 12th Army had unknowingly entered the "big pocket" arranged by the PLA soldiers.
Huang Wei felt bad, and he immediately ordered his troops to abandon the attack on SuXian and began to move outward for a breakthrough. But at this time, it was too late, and under the harassment of the guerrilla warfare of the People's Liberation Army, the marching speed of the various units of the Huang Wei Corps was greatly delayed. By the next day, not a single unit could reach the strategic location that Huang Wei had arranged in advance.
Although Huang Wei organized several breakthroughs, they all ended in failure. Although the troops of the Huang Wei Corps were not ready, the soldiers of our army could not wait for it. The Huang Wei Corps had long been surrounded, and now it was time to shrink the encirclement. With the command of the command, the People's Liberation Army launched an all-out attack, and the movement war was transformed into a position war.
Although the first breakthrough before completing the siege failed, Huang Wei was not discouraged. With the support of the Air Force, Huang Wei found that although our army had completed the encirclement, due to the lack of time, it had not built a complete fortification. As the situation became more and more unfavorable, Huang Wei decided to give it a final shot. He wanted to take this opportunity to use 4 main forces to launch a breakthrough at the same time when our army was not ready.

When Liao Yunzhou learned of Huang Wei's battle plan, he was very worried. Because the facts are indeed like Huang Wei said, the PLA troops have not yet gained a firm foothold. The Huang Wei Corps did not have a great attrition in the previous ground movement battles, and was well-equipped, with many heavy weapons. Once the 4 main divisions of the Huang Wei Corps attacked together, it was very likely that they would break through the encirclement, then the battle would be abandoned.
Liao Yunzhou, who was impatient, realized that this breakout operation was also a perfect opportunity for insurrection. If the uprising is successful, it will not only make Huang Wei's breakthrough plan fail, but also have a great impact on the entire Kuomintang army. Therefore, before the breakthrough, Liao Yunzhou took the initiative to ask for help, hoping to be the vanguard of the breakthrough. In that situation at that time, even Huang Wei did not expect that there were generals who took the initiative to ask for battle.
After learning of Liao Yunzhou's idea, Huang Wei was very happy, and he completely trusted Liao Yunzhou. In this way, Liao Yunzhou took the advanced weapons of the 12th Corps and set out for the People's Liberation Army that surrounded them. What Huang Wei did not know was that Liao Yunzhou, commander of the 110th Division, was a general of our party lurking within the Kuomintang. He asked for a breakthrough at the last moment, not really wanting to be a pioneer, but returning to the team with advanced weapons.
Before the breakout operation began, Liao Yunzhou sent Huang Wei's plan to the headquarters of our army. At the same time, he also told the command headquarters about his intention to prepare for the uprising. After deliberating with the command, it was decided that an uprising could be revolted. After receiving approval, Liao Yunzhou also discussed the plan of the uprising with the command. The two sides agreed that on the battlefield, all the 110th division led by Liao Yunzhou would tie a white cloth to their arms. When PLA soldiers see the white cloth, they will receive them.
Because there were other troops participating in the breakout at the same time, Liao Yunzhou feared that plans for an uprising would be discovered. Or on the battlefield, other units would begin to pursue the 110th Division, leading to the failure of the uprising. In order to avoid a similar situation, Liao Yunzhou found Huang Wei again. He suggested to Huang Wei that the main division of the 18th Army could be kept as a reserve, and that after the 110th Division was successful, it could be quickly followed. Huang Wei, who was full of joy, naturally would not disagree with Liao Yunzhou's suggestion.
In this way, the 110th Division, under the leadership of Liao Yunzhou, advanced to the PLA position. When PLA fighters noticed the signal of the white cloth, they also began to pretend to attack. Under the cover of gunfire, the 110th Division successfully passed the encirclement. At this time, Huang Wei still did not know anything, and constantly asked Liao Yunzhou how the breakthrough was.
The 110th Division, with the help of our soldiers, successfully reached the assembly area, and the uprising was a complete success. After that, the leaders of the Party Central Committee also sent a special congratulatory message. While Liao Yunzhou and others were already happily celebrating the victory of the uprising with other fighters, Huang Wei and others in the encirclement circle were still waiting for the signal of "successful breakthrough" to arrive. Until the news of the 110th Division's uprising came, Huang Wei still couldn't believe it.
In the end, Huang Wei panicked because of Liao Yunzhou's uprising. The success of the uprising also marked the collapse of the Huang Wei Legion. On December 6, our troops launched a general offensive against the Huang Wei Army. The 12th Regiment was almost completely destroyed, Huang Wei and another deputy commander of the corps were captured, and only Hu Lian succeeded in breaking through. Later, Liu Zhi wrote in his memoirs that if Liao Yunzhou had not revolted, Huang Wei's army would not have been completely destroyed, which showed that Liao Yunzhou played a key role.
After the founding of New China, although they both served in the Kuomintang 12 Corps, Huang Wei and Liao Yunzhou had a completely different ending. Liao Yunzhou was originally a member of the Communist Party, but he had been hiding in the Kuomintang army. Therefore, after the founding of New China, Liao Yunzhou successively served as the principal of Shenyang Artillery School and the director of the Jilin Provincial Sports Committee. In 1955, Liao Yunzhou was awarded the rank of major general, and his future was immeasurable.
Huang Wei, on the other hand, was a thorough Kuomintang war criminal who participated in and commanded many battles during the Liberation War.
