Stationed at the stronghold was a unit under Zhong Zhaokui, the leader of the Kuomintang militia regiment.
At that time, in Fujian Province, Zhong Zhaokui was an anti-communist leader known for his extreme reaction and brutality. This man was originally born as a bandit, did all kinds of bad things, and later became the leader of the Kuomintang militia.
It has to be admitted that Zhong Zhaokui still had a set of rules for fighting, and he built a very strong artillery tower in Baishawei, which posed a serious threat to the activities of the Red Army guerrillas.
In order to pull out this tumor, the Fujian Provincial Military Region has sent troops to attack on many occasions, but because Zhong Zhaokui sat in command, our army failed to succeed in many attacks.
After studying, the provincial military district decided to entrust the task of attacking the artillery tower again to Liu Yongsheng, commander of the Red Eighth Regiment, who was eager to fight and had considerable experience.
After Liu Yongsheng led his troops to the vicinity of Baishawei, he carefully reconnaissance of the surrounding terrain and enemy situation, basically ascertained the situation within the number of guns, and formulated a detailed battle plan.
Just as the battle was about to begin, Liu Yongsheng's immediate superior, You Duanxuan, commander of the Independent Eighth Division, suddenly rushed over with the battalion directly under the division and demanded that the Red Eighth Regiment suspend the attack.
You Duanxuan was originally a cadre of the main Red Army, who had just been transferred to the provincial military district to serve as a division commander, and of course he attached great importance to his first battle after taking office, so he personally came to supervise the battle.
However, when You Duanxuan hurriedly arrived, he was greatly disappointed in Liu Yongsheng, because in his eyes, Liu Yongsheng was just a peasant with no good looks, no culture, and straight speech, who had neither attended military school nor understood any military theory, and he could not talk with him at all.
You Duanxuan couldn't help but secretly wonder in his heart: In the past, our army attacked the Baisha Wei Fort many times without success, and now the provincial military district has entrusted the heavy task of attacking the fort to such a cropper, is it a mistake in employing people?
After much deliberation, he ordered Liu Yongsheng to cancel the combat mission and lead his troops to retreat immediately on the grounds that the conditions for attacking the turret were not ripe.
Of course, this order made Liu Yongsheng unable to understand, and he was surprised and asked one after another: The whole regiment is ready for battle, why did he inexplicably say that if he didn't fight, he wouldn't fight?
You Duanxuan said that our army does not yet have the combat ability to deal with the enemy's strong fortifications, and if it cannot succeed, it will also attract reinforcements from the enemy army, which will make our army into a dilemma and may cause no small casualties.
Liu Yongsheng insisted on fighting according to the original plan, and said that the Red Eighth Regiment was determined to win and would never return from the defeat of Baishawei.
Seeing that his attitude was so resolute and that his idea of not daring to fight this battle had also changed, You Duanxuan asked, "Are you really sure?" ”
"I can't beat the turret, and I Liu Yongsheng are willing to be dealt with by military law!"
Then, Liu Yongsheng made a detailed report on the situation that the troops had previously detected and the combat plan they had studied, and proposed that as long as a non-complicated requirement of the Red Eighth Regiment was met, the battle would be sure to be won.
"What are your requests?"
"I hope that the superiors will approve us to borrow three things from the people nearby."
"Which three things?"
"200 door panels, 80 long wooden boards, and 200 wood knives."
Then, Liu Yongsheng recounted the use of three things in battle after borrowing three things.
When You Duanxuan listened, his eyes lit up: it turned out that this peasant who had no culture and spoke very straight really had his own unique ideas when he started a war!
Under such circumstances, You Duanxuan approved Liu Yongsheng's request for battle. Subsequently, with the assistance of the cadres at that time, Liu Yongsheng actively mobilized the masses, and in less than a day he raised the door panels, long wooden boards, firewood knives and other items he needed.
At dawn the next day, the commanders and fighters of the Red Eighth Regiment, under the command of Liu Yongsheng, formally launched an attack on the Baisha Polder Artillery Tower.
The first battalion was the main attacking unit, and the soldiers, in addition to carrying guns, carried door panels, long wooden planks or wooden knives, and quietly approached the sides of the enemy's turret in several ways, lurking under the surrounding ridges.
After the first battalion was all in place, Liu Yongsheng gave an order and the three battalions serving as feint troops launched an attack from the front of the artillery tower. The sound of charge trumpets, gunshots, earthen cannons, and the shouts of the soldiers became one, shaking the entire White Sand polder.
The enemy in the turret woke up from his slumber and rushed to the perforation and returned fire on the Red Eighth Regiment.
Liu Yongsheng saw that most of the enemy's troops had been drawn to the front, and immediately ordered the battalions lying in ambush on both flanks to begin to move.
The warriors carried the door panels, spread them on the bamboo sticks and iron tribulus arrays that were the enemy's first line of defense, and then used the remaining door panels to spread out vertically one by one, forming an offensive passage and attacking the barbed wire.
Immediately after, the warriors swung their wooden knives and cut several large gaps in the barbed wire, easily disintegrating the enemy's second line of defense.
At this time, many soldiers carried thick long wooden planks to the trenches under the gun towers and built simple wooden bridges. The troops stepped on the long wooden planks, easily jumped over the trenches, and attacked the enemy's gun tower like a swift wind and thunder, so they easily broke the enemy's position!
The enemy was blown up by the rows of grenades thrown by the Red Army soldiers, and they were unable to resist any longer, so they scattered and fled, and most of the enemy could not escape at all, so they had to surrender their weapons.
The battle took just over an hour to win a complete victory, which made the Red Eighth Regiment army greatly shocked, and also made You Duanxuan, who had originally planned to cancel the battle, praise Liu Yongsheng.
Later, Liu Yongsheng became an excellent commander in the history of our army and was awarded the rank of major general in 1955.
