On the morning of November 20, the staff of Xuchang Central Park found "a yellow flower in Canada" and immediately eradicated this "beautiful killer".
"Canada's yellow flower" first appeared in the southern region of China, and was raised at home as an ornamental flower. However, after years of reproduction, this flower has been widely appeared in Zhengzhou, Kaifeng, Xinxiang, Xinyang, Xuchang and other places in our province, showing an explosive trend.
It is understood that the "Canadian yellow flower" is the second batch of invasive alien species in China, which is "tenacious in vitality, difficult to kill, and harmful to the land" and must be concentrated and suppressed.
On the morning of the same day, in Central Park, gardeners first cut the 2-meter-high "Canadian yellow flower" from the roots with a sickle, then dug out the roots with a pickaxe for centralized burning, and then treated the soil with herbicides. Most of these flowers grow under the black oak tree, some are blooming, some have just grown flower bones, and some have passed the flowering period, leaving a plant more than 1 meter tall. These flowers look no different from ordinary plants, but they give off a foul smell.
The Office of the Xuchang National Ecological Garden City Creation Headquarters issued a notice requiring relevant departments to take active actions to comprehensively check whether the green space under its jurisdiction has "a yellow flower in Canada", and if found, it will be uniformly removed in accordance with the relevant technical specifications.
In addition, the garden department of our city reminds everyone that there is no need to panic about the rational view of invasive alien species such as "Canada's yellow flower". For these invasive species with particularly strong reproductive and transmission capabilities, it is necessary to achieve "early detection and early elimination".
So, what is the harm of "Canada's yellow flower"? According to relevant information, it is an exotic species, which was introduced as an ornamental plant in Shanghai, Nanjing and other places in the mid-1930s, initially planted in gardens, and then "escaped" into the wild to become a vicious weed, posing a huge threat to natural ecosystems and biodiversity. Therefore, it is also known as "overlord grass" and "poisonous grass", which can be described as "yellow flowers blooming and killing hundreds of flowers".
Li Yunzhong, deputy director of the Central Park Comprehensive Management Office of the Municipal Urban Administration, told reporters that the introduced species themselves are not terrible, and sweet potatoes, corn, etc. are all alien species. However, some introduced alien species have "crazy growth" due to the lack of natural enemies or conditions that restrict growth, and dominate in the new environment, that is, the so-called aggressiveness is particularly strong, known as invasive alien species.
"Successful invasions of alien species can be divided into four phases: introduction, settlement, naturalization and spread." Li Yunzhong said that shortly after the introduction of seeds, the "Canadian Yellow Flower" due to the large number of seeds, strong reproductive ability, coupled with its "wildfire inexhaustible, spring wind blowing and growing again" underground stems, with the seeds scattered, escape to the wild, from the 1980s began to spread rapidly, becoming a vicious weed.
The current research results show that the "Canadian yellow flower" and the surrounding plants compete for sunlight, space and water, which seriously encroaches on the "territory" of other native plants. However, in addition to destroying the ecological balance, it is not harmful to the human body.
So, how to eradicate the "yellow flower of Canada"? "It's uprooted at the first point of discovery. After it has spread into pieces, it is more difficult to eliminate it. Li Yunzhong said.
