Zhiying's puppets will reportedly be operated by fellow Asian-American Catherine King, who said she wanted to break people's stereotypes of Asians through Zhiying, explain to children what racism is, and teach children to recognize and oppose racial discrimination.
Influenced by the "Black Lives Matter" movement and the Asian-American hatred brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, Sesame Street created a special "Please See How We Meet" series to tell children about race, ethnicity and culture. Earlier this year, Sesame Street also added an African-American character, Tamir, to discuss racist topics. (Ren Siyu)
