In the historical and cultural customs of various parts of Yunnan,
What "intimate encounters" have you had with elephants?
Kunming: Elephants have been under the BijiFang, and Panlongjiang has been bathed
In the past, Kunming dolls, walking with heavy objects, or when they needed people to give way, would shout cheerfully: "Let go, elephants cross the street, step on it... ”
("The Qianlong Emperor Washed Elephant Map.") Painting by Qing Dynasty painter Ding Guanpeng)
Professor Xiong Siyuan of Yunnan University introduced that when Gongxiang arrived in China, the first city he entered was Kunming, and in the eleventh year of Daoguang (1831), Ruan Yuan, the governor and scholar of Yungui who received gongxiang, wrote a "tribute elephant poem": "Taming elephants with high heads across jinman, and ten thousand people under Bijifang look at it." "Recorded the grand situation of "elephant crossing the street" under the Golden Horse and BijiFang.
(White Elephant Blessing)
After arriving in Kunming, these tribute elephants needed to be rested, so the government built an elephant house for them, and before leaving for the capital, they would arrange for someone to lead the elephants to the Panlong River for bathing. On this day, Kunming is also like a festival, with pennants flying, gongs and drums in the sky, crowded and bustling. Xiong Siyuan introduced that according to the Ming Dynasty, Kunming also had a bamboo branch, which wrote about the elephant bathing in the Panlong River: "Panjiang river is light shade with green locusts, incense cars and bamboo shoots are piled up; thousands of dollars are more expensive to sit in the window of the building, only for the river to wash elephants." ”
Kunming also has an elephant eye street: "The reason why it is called elephant eye street is because in the past, there was a naturally formed pattern like an elephant's head on the bluestone slab paved on this street, of which the elephant eye was particularly obvious, so it was named Elephant Eye Street; and the other said that it was because it was once the location of the elephant house of the Yunnan Government Office during the Ming and Qing dynasties." ”

In Kunming folk, there is also a moving legend about the origin of the "mother river" in Guandu District - Baoxiang River: the village is short of water, the livelihood is difficult, Samui girl Amy in order to drink water into the village, married to the elephant guarding the water source, the elephant dragged the river water to Dianchi Lake, so there is kunming's second largest water system Baoxiang River.

Xishuangbanna: Indulge in elephants and integrate into life
Xishuangbanna is called "Meng Balanasi" in ancient Dai, which means "ideal and magical paradise". People also call this place "the land of peacocks" and "the paradise of elephants". In the life of the Dai people, the peacock symbolizes auspiciousness, the elephant symbolizes the harvest of grains, especially the elephant is closely related to their life, and there has been a history of raising elephants since ancient times.
There are elephants in the jungle, statues in villages and temples, statues by wells, pictures of elephants in murals and cloth paintings, various elephant crafts in home furnishings, legends and stories of elephants in folklore, white elephants in religious festivals... In short, elephant worship permeates all areas of Dai social life. Elephant worship is an important part of Dai culture.

The diversification and diversity of murals makes their artistic expression extremely colorful, and the creator's casual and personalized style is respected by modern painting, and the rich local atmosphere and simple and clumsy painting techniques in the paintings strengthen the visual impact and artistic appeal of the picture. The images of buildings, figures, animals and plants in the golden water pattern are expressed by the local people through long-term observation and summary, transforming intuitive and concrete objects into abstract shapes, and giving them the symbolic connotation of auspiciousness and blessing.

These three kilns of ancient ceramic production are now believed to have been firing porcelain since the Ming Dynasty at the latest, and have gone through the stages of blue glaze, blue and white porcelain and color glazed porcelain, and are still producing porcelain for life and architecture to this day.
