Is Yuan Longping from Hunan or Jiangxi?
It starts with his name.
Why is Yuan Longping named Yuan Longping? His surname is Yuan, he is a long character, born in Beiping. Nicknamed Ermao.
He had a clear introduction to his siblings:
"The names of our brothers are basically taken by generation and place of birth. My elder brother Longjin (Da Mao), two years older than me, was born in Tianjin; the old third Longgan, when he named him, our family had already left Beiping and returned to his hometown in Jiangxi; the fourth brother Longde was born in 1932 in De'an's hometown, which is considered a real De'an person; the fifth brother Longxiang was born in Taoyuan, Hunan. Yuan Longjin, Yuan Longping, Yuan Longgan, Yuan Longde, Yuan Longxiang, the names of the five sons of a milk compatriot, embedded in five places in China, reflecting the trajectory of the Chinese fate of the war years.
Their father, Yuan Xinglie, a native of De'an, Jiujiang, Jiangxi, grew up in a mansion called the Summer Palace in de'an County.
The Yuan family
The ancestors of the Yuan family have lived for generations in Qingzhu Banpo, a village at the junction of Fucheng Village in Puting Town, Dongputing Town, De'an County, and Zhaixia Village in Jinhu Township. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides, with dense bamboo forests, water in front of the village, and bluestone paving.
In 1840, Yuan Fanren (Yuan Longping's great-grandfather) was born. Due to the continuous disaster of the Boyang River, his homeland was difficult, and after occasionally receiving silver, he and his three brothers abandoned agriculture and business, moved to De'an County, and rented a shop to sell mountain goods and local specialties. After the business became bigger, a three-story mansion was built in the area of the old tofu society in the county town of Daximen, known as the "Yuan Clan of the West Garden", which is regarded as the "Wang Clan" of the county town.
The business has been done in neighboring provinces, the industry is divided into families, and the five brothers of Yuan Shengjian (Yuan Longping's grandfather) have their own suitability. Rich and re-educated, the Yuan family changed from a merchant to a scholarly monk. Yuan Shengjian went to the provincial capital for the first time to take the township examination and was selected as a person. Later, he served as a member of the Jiangxi Provincial Council, the county magistrate of Wenchang, Hainan, and the president of the Jiangxi Civilian Hospital. He bought the cloth hall yamen of the late Qing Dynasty at the north gate of De'an County, and renamed it "Summer Palace" after transformation.
Yuan Xinglie (Yuan Longping's father) was admitted to the Chinese Department of National Southeast University, and after graduating from college, he returned to his hometown to serve as the principal and supervisor of The Higher Primary School in De'an County. From the 1920s to 1938, Yuan Xinglie worked at the Pinghan Railway Bureau. Later, Yuan Xinglie, because of his righteous act of donating 500 large knives to resist Japan with his friend Chen Zishan, was heavily valued by sun Lianzhong, a general of the Northwest Army, and became his colonel-level secretary.
On August 13, 1929, Yuan Longping was born in Peking Union Medical College Hospital (where his mother's sister worked as a nurse), Dr. Lin Qiaozhi delivered the baby and filled out the birth card:

But the file was not discovered until Yuan Longping was 80 years old, and was previously mistaken for being born in 1930. Academician Yuan didn't bother to change it, and today's Baidu Encyclopedia has not changed it.

From 1931 to 1936, Yuan Longping returned to his hometown of De'an from Beiping with his mother and lived in the Summer Palace of Yuanjiashan.
The memories between the ages of 2 and 7, Yuan Longping in his later years have successively revealed to people:
Every day, in addition to studying in his own private school, he played in the Summer Palace, played games with his younger siblings, and went to the front yard to play dates and pick persimmons. The dates and persimmons on the trees, very sweet. People often come to the Summer Palace to visit their grandfathers, some riding high-headed horses, some riding turtle shell cars. Every year during the Spring Festival, the family makes hundreds of kilograms of frozen rice candy to entertain relatives and friends who come to visit the New Year. Grandfather did not smile, grandmother loved to smoke shisha. Once, he secretly took a sip of the shisha and choked so much that he broke the hookah, and his grandmother angrily took the pipe and gently tapped him on the head. When I grew up a little longer, my grandfather taught me to read. He was sometimes playful and had been beaten by his grandfather. My grandfather died when he was 4 years old (1933).
The situation gradually changed, and during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Yuan family's family property in De'an County was destroyed by the war, leaving only a private school house. The parents took their children to Wuhan and escaped the disaster.
From De'an to Hankou, Yuan Longping's primary school was completed in Hankou, Lixian County, Hunan and Chongqing, and the middle school was completed in 6 schools in Chongqing, Wuhan and Nanjing (but it was really turbulent).
In August 1949, he was admitted to the Crop Major of the Department of Agronomy of Chongqing Xianghui College (the department was adjusted and merged into the newly built Department of Agronomy of Southwest Agricultural College in Chongqing), during which he enrolled unsuccessfully in the army and graduated from Southwest Agricultural College (now Southwest University) in 1953.
After graduation, he taught at anjiang agricultural school in Huaihua, Hunan Province.
In July 1960, a natural hybrid rice plant was accidentally found in the experimental field of the agricultural school, which began Yuan Longping's hybrid rice breeding journey. In 1971, Yuan Longping was transferred to the Hybrid Rice Research Collaborative Group of the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences. In 1975, hybrid rice was successfully bred. In 1976, hybrid rice was successfully promoted.
In 1977, Yuan Huifang saw a photo of Yuan Longping winning an award in the newspaper and found that this person looked too much like his brother, and the text content was really his brother Yuan Longping. She wrote a letter to Yuan Longping according to the work unit provided in the newspaper, and only then was she contacted.
In 1978, Yuan Longping went to Nanchang for a meeting and took time to visit Yuan Huifang in De'an. At this time, it was the first time the brothers and sisters had met after 32 years of disappearance. In 1946, after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Yuan Huifang returned to De'an with her birth mother from Chongqing along the Yangtze River and lived in the Old North Gate.
This was also the first time that Yuan Longping returned to his hometown after leaving De'an in 1936 and quietly met his relatives.
Return
In 2001, Yuan Longping was invited to be a senior consultant of Jiangxi's "Three Rural Areas" "Get Rich Express".
In 2002, Yuan Longping donated 100,000 yuan to his hometown De'an "Longping Scholarship".
On September 25, 2004, Yuan Longping and his wife, son, daughter-in-law and grandson returned to their hometown of Li De'an to worship their ancestors. At the invitation of the De'an County Party Committee and County Government, he returned to his hometown in a public capacity for the first time.
The people of the whole county are welcome. Welcome is the "father of hybrid rice", the contemporary Shennong who makes the Chinese people no longer hungry, and the son of De'an, whose grandfather and father have served the public welfare of De'an.
He inscribed "Deep Affection in the Old Garden, Heart for De'an", unveiled the "De'an Yizhong Longping Library", and reunited with his relatives.
At that time, in the CCTV "Charm of China" program, he was the recommender of Jiujiang's urban charm, and said this about Jiujiang, to which De'an belongs:
"I have lived in Hunan for a long time, but my hometown is Jiujiang. It was the place where I was born and it's a very beautiful place. To this day, I often dream of returning to my hometown, the land of fish and rice. Jiujiang is one of the four rice cities, when I was young, rice was on the station, square and dock, a lot of rice was shipped out, that fragrant rice fragrance, I still remember it vividly. In 2012, Yuan Longping inscribed "Grandfather Yuan Shengjian's Former Residence".
In September 2015, Yuan Longping returned to De'an and came to Yuanjiashan in Houtian Village, Hedong Township, to unveil the newly established "Jiangxi Provincial Science Popularization Education Base" (the theme hall was restored and rebuilt according to the ancestral residence of Academician Yuan Longping), and donated 200,000 yuan of "Longping Scholarship" to De'an No. 1 Middle School.
In October 2016, Yuan Longping returned to De'an to inaugurate the hybrid rice science and technology education demonstration park, participated in the Longping high-yield super rice super excellent 1000 yield measurement, visited teachers and students at Longping School in De'an County, and donated 100,000 yuan for school construction.
In July 2020, the Yuan Longping Town Project in De'an County signed a contract to build a non-established characteristic town integrating modern agriculture, scientific and technological agriculture, smart agriculture and sightseeing agriculture in three phases.
Good seeds
"I'm from De'an County, Jiangxi," Yuan Said.
"People are like seeds, be a good seed." This is his famous quote.
De'an, Huaihua, and Changsha all hope that this good seed will sleep in their own underground, and with the appeal of their spirit and character, they will breed more good seeds.
