The establishment of Hanchuan County began in the first year of Baoding (561 AD) of emperor Wu of the Northern zhou Dynasty in the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and was named because the Han River ran through the whole territory, and was known as the "hometown of fish and rice, the pearl of Jianghan".
In March 1997, the county was abolished and established as a city, with a land area of 1,663 square kilometers, jurisdiction over 25 township field offices, 1 state-level economic development zone, and a population of 903296 (as of November 1, 2020, there is no permanent resident population). It is an advanced county and city in the national scientific and technological progress assessment, a national model county (city) for intensive land resource conservation, the best cultural city in the country, the hometown of Chinese folk culture and art, the hometown of Chinese poetry, and the hometown of Chinese river crab.

In 2020, the city completed the regional GDP of 64.566 billion yuan, completed the industrial output value of 126.2 billion yuan, the total retail sales of social consumer goods of 21.85 billion yuan, the fiscal revenue of 3.33 billion yuan, the local public budget revenue of 2.07 billion yuan, the actual utilization of foreign capital of 102.81 million US dollars; the realization of foreign trade exports of 476 million US dollars.

Hanchuan is an industrial city with strong industries. The city has formed six leading industries of textile and clothing, metal products, food processing, printing and packaging, electric power and energy, and optical communications, with 427 enterprises on the regulations, and the total industrial output value of the regulations is leading in the province. It is one of the 414 major grain producing counties in the country, and the total grain output is stable at more than 1 billion jin; it is the largest county of livestock and pigs transferred out of the country, the poultry cage volume is the first in the province, the output of aquatic products has ranked first in the province for many years, the output of lotus root has ranked first in the province, and it is an important "vegetable basket" base around Wuhan. Hancheon is a livable city with beautiful ecology. The water resources of Hanchuan are unique, the rivers and lakes are longitudinal, the water town is rich in characteristics, and the water area reaches 510,000 mu. There are 44 large and medium-sized rivers such as the Han River and the Hanbei River, and 15 lakes included in the provincial management list. The Culminating River and The Pumping Station River meander in the urban area, and fenfen lake is included in the pilot dredging of lakes in the province, and the construction of a national wetland park is stepped up; the international leisure community of Tianyu Lake has been rated as a provincial tourist resort, and the provincial leisure agriculture demonstration sites such as Tianshuiwan Ecological Leisure Farm, Baihe Ecological Agricultural Park, and Ruihong Ecological Agricultural Park have risen vigorously, and the global tourism pattern has gradually taken shape.
