The revitalization and utilization of historical buildings is a difficult problem in urban renewal. Wang Xiaoqian, a professor at Southeast University's School of Architecture, described it as "dancing in shackles." In Nanjing, the revitalization and utilization of historical buildings takes on different forms.
In the future, the Daxuechang Airport Watchtower will be presented as a small library
This small building is the Nanjing University Campus Airport Watchtower, and the center is about two stories high. Daxuechang Airport was once one of the best airports in China, and after its completion in 1929, planes roared past, carrying the memories of generations of Nanjing people. An old factory building is Building 28 of the second machine tool factory. The machine tool factory was formerly known as the Jiangnan Silver Dollar Bureau, which was founded in 1897 and has a history of more than 100 years. The once abandoned factory building has been transformed into a creative entrepreneurship park, the National Innovation Park, and building 28 is still unused.

The Grand Campus Airport Watchtower will be presented as a small library in the future. The scheme has less disturbance to the original state of the historical building, and the historical style of the building itself is better maintained. The tower is located in the core area of the southern new city, and is planned to be built into an urban cultural living room oriented by the integrated development of TOD station city.
The Capital Theater has become a display platform for republic of China films
At the beginning of this year, after five years of construction, the Xiaoxi lake historical style area covering an area of 46,900 square meters was officially opened, welcoming visitors from all over the world with a smile. This historical district of Nanjing's old city south, which was formed in the Ming and Qing dynasties and has experienced 600 years of vicissitudes, has regained its new life, becoming an excellent case of urban renewal in the country and becoming a new Internet celebrity punch card.
Located at No. 84 Gongyuan Street of the Confucius Temple, the Grand Theater of the Capital of the Republic of China was "resurrected" in "Repairing the Old as Old". After the renovation of the building, instead of restoring the function of the "theater", it was planned as the museum of the former site of the capital grand theater, which was used as a display platform for the republic of China films and displayed relevant cultural relics.
"Compared with ordinary buildings, historical buildings have to comply with protection requirements in the transformation and face many rules and regulations; compared with the cultural protection units that are mainly based on protection, the protection level of historical buildings is relatively lower, and the number is very large, which is very much in need of revitalization and utilization." How to maintain a balance between both protection and transformation is often controversial on specific buildings. This makes historical buildings often become "hot potatoes", and some property rights units are not willing to accept this "medal", or even avoid it. How many ways do historic buildings open? "We don't want all historical buildings to become the same look, such as museums, we hope that they can become various under the premise of being protected in terms of structure, style, etc., truly 'alive', form their own characteristics, and become Nanjing's urban cultural landmarks." Wang Zhaozhao, director of the Mingcheng Division of the Nanjing Municipal Bureau of Planning and Resources, said.
