Recently, the research results of Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University, the State Key Laboratory of Biochemical Engineering of the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University and other experts, "Ferritin-based arsenic target delivery to different types of leukemias has a strong anti-leukemia treatment effect", was published in the scientific journal Nature Nanotechnology. The study shows that through the efficient delivery of innovative dosage forms, it is expected to achieve a new breakthrough in arsenic modernization, making arsenic a targeted drug for the treatment of leukemia.
Leukemia is one of the top ten high-incidence malignant tumors in China. According to Li Yuhua, director of the Department of Hematology at Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University, "Clinically, chemotherapy is the main treatment method for various types of leukemias. The main clinical drugs include antimetabolites, alkylating agents, alkaloids, antibiotics, hormones and arsenic trioxide proposed by Chinese scholars."
Arsenic trioxide (commonly known as arsenic cream) is China's independent invention, the world's first special drug for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia, in clinical application has a history of nearly 45 years, is the most common first-line drug for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia. However, arsenic trioxide is easily susceptible to toxic side effects when applied to the treatment of leukemia. How to improve targeting and reduce drug toxicity and side effects has become a problem that the academic community has been paying attention to.
Experts from Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University, State Key Laboratory of Biochemical Engineering, Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Peking University collaborated to carry out interdisciplinary research on leukemia treatment. In the course of the study, experts found that CD71 is highly expressed in many types of leukemia cells and can be used as a universal target for leukemia cells. Ferritin is a natural ligand of CD71, which can be recognized by CD71, and after the arsenic trioxide is "wrapped" with ferritin, it can be targeted and delivered with the help of the inherent way in the body to achieve the purpose of accurately targeting the elimination of leukemia.
"In layman's terms, it is through a certain process means to wrap the arsenic with ferritin, and the antigen CD71 on the surface of leukemia cells is like a 'gripper', which will actively 'grab' it when it encounters ferritin, so that the arsenic can smoothly sneak into the leukemia cell and 'kill'." Li Yuhua explained.
