Chen Hesheng is a well-known particle physicist in China, the director of the Beijing Positron-Negative Electron Collider National Laboratory, the general commander and chief scientist of the China Spallation Neutron Source Project, the chief scientist of the China Spallation Neutron Source Project, the director of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Nuclear Electronics and Nuclear Exploration, and the representative of the 11th and 12th National People's Congress.

In a word, it is to create a powerful "bright sword" platform for solving the problem of "card neck" in China, which is of great significance for breaking through the blockade of foreign high-end technology research methods, exploring China's cutting-edge scientific problems, and conquering industrial core technologies.

Chen Hesheng is one of the main initiators of the spallation neutron source project in China. In 2000, he and more than a dozen scientists wrote to the state to build a spallation neutron source belonging to China, and the National Leading Group for Science and Education approved the prefabricated study of the China Spallation Neutron Source Project in 2005 after several rounds of demonstration and inspection. Considering the important role of spallation neutron sources in high-end technological innovation and promoting the upgrading and transformation of traditional industries, in February 2006, Chen Hesheng actively suggested that the leaders of the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission consider settling spallation neutron sources in Guangdong Province. In May of the same year, at the invitation of the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission, he came to Guangdong Province to select a site for the source of spallation neutrons and determined the construction site in Dongguan.

Talking about the reasons for choosing Songshan Lake, Chen Hesheng believes that there are many factors, "First of all, the location we selected in Songshan Lake is the most suitable for the Source of Spallation Neutrons in China, and the Dongguan Municipal Government supports us very strongly." ”

Subsequently, he served as the commander-in-chief and engineering manager of the spallation neutron source engineering command, presiding over the design and construction of the project. The construction of spallation neutron source has achieved a large number of scientific and technological innovations and integrated innovations, adopted an optimized design scheme, achieved the best cost performance, and the localization rate of equipment reached 90%, which effectively promoted the development of related domestic high-tech industries.

The completion of the device makes China the fourth country in the world to have a spallation neutron source, providing the most advanced research platform for basic research and high-tech development in China's material science and technology, life sciences, resources and environment, new energy, etc., which is of great significance to meet the major strategic needs of the country (including many bottlenecks such as high-speed rail axles and aircraft engines) and support cutting-edge scientific research.

By the summer of 2021, the number of registered users of spallation neutron sources has exceeded 2,000, and more than 500 user experiments have been completed, 12% of which are from enterprises. Users have obtained a large number of important results, far more than the results of the U.S.-Japan spallation neutron source at the same stage. In February 2020, the target power of the spallation neutron source reached the design target of 100 kW one and a half years ahead of schedule.

China's scientific and technological development can only rely on Chinese to struggle on its own

The construction of China's spallation neutron source highlights the mission of the country and the responsibility of the team. In the process of key technology research and development, equipment development, installation and commissioning of the device, the three generations of scientific research and engineering personnel of the old, middle and young generations have coordinated to overcome the difficulties of off-site construction and built China's first pulsed spallation neutron source.

In particular, the older generation of scientists represented by Chen Hesheng inherited the rich experience and dedication of China's first large scientific device, the Beijing Positron-Positron Collider and its transformation project, and had the courage to take responsibility and overcome all difficulties.

In order to rush back to the construction period, he led the team to fight a battle, decided to cross the installation and commissioning of general facilities and civil construction, first installed and debugged the equipment on the ground, and then transported it to the tunnel for reinstallation. Doing so saves commissioning time for the equipment, but multiplies the workload.

In the summer of 2014, the scorching heat and heavy work in the south made Chen Hesheng's health worry for a while, and before that, he had undergone many heart surgeries. The team was worried about his body, but he didn't think so and stuck to his job. Chen Hesheng said: "The development of science and technology in China can only be built by relying on Chinese to struggle on their own land, and I should do my part for her." ”

In August 2020, Chen Hesheng's team successfully built a boron neutron capture treatment tumor (BNCT) experimental device in Dongguan using the technology developed by spallation neutron sources, helping China to develop this new binary cell-level precision medicine advanced technology.

Chen Hesheng believes that Dongguan has made great efforts in the introduction of talents, and the policies and measures introduced by the government cover all aspects of talent services such as children's schooling and talent project funding support, coupled with the livable natural environment of Songshan Lake, prompting a large number of scientific researchers from Beijing to Dongguan to work in China, and attracting many domestic and foreign talents to join.

At present, the number of scientific researchers working in Dongguan by China Spallation Neutron Source has reached 540, and the number of personnel in the staff has reached 392. The National Development and Reform Commission has approved the second phase of China's spallation neutron source construction project, which will increase the power by five times and build the experimental terminal. Chen Hesheng said: "The most important thing is to establish a high-level team of experienced scientific research, engineering technology and management in Dongguan. At the same time, this team will provide a very critical force for the construction of a large-scale scientific platform in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. ”
