The "2018 Animation Carnival" was held in Guangzhou from August 11 to 12, with many domestic and foreign guests attending. Anitama was also fortunate to participate in the event and participated in several interviews. On the first day, we conducted a brief interview with Zero Matsumoto, the master who created classic masterpieces such as "Galaxy Railway 999", "Captain Harock the Cosmic Pirate", and "Queen Emilardas".
——You have produced many famous works in your pen, what are you particularly concerned about when creating these works?
Matsumoto drew this manga for a purpose, and the purpose of this manga is the part that I care about most. If the purpose of the comic is not found, then the reader will not find it interesting. However, the purpose of this creation is not to "awaken" at the beginning of the painting, but in the process of painting. At the beginning, when I drew, I only thought about drawing interesting comics, but if I didn't have a creative purpose, I couldn't make the audience accept it.
—— Didn't the original purpose be thought out before creation?
Matsumoto, when he first started creating, he didn't react to what he wanted to paint, and when he painted, he began to grope, such as how he felt when he watched this work, how they thought after showing it to friends and acquaintances, looking for inspiration from them, and painting according to their ideas. Because this is a comic that everyone wants to see, everyone likes this kind of comic.
So why I drew this comic was the thing I cared about most when I drew a comic.
——This year' "Galaxy Railway 999" has ushered in its 40th anniversary, and it is also presented to the audience in a very new form such as stage drama and live TV series (生ドラマ). What do you think of this 40th anniversary?
The train that appears in Matsumoto's work Galaxy Railway 999 is based on the train in my hometown of Kyushu, which I took from Kyushu to Tokyo. "Galaxy Railway 999" for me, is not yet the end of the journey, so the name "999", less than 1000, is also my youth, even to the 40th anniversary, I am still continuing its creation.
── So what do you think about stage plays and live TV series, and what about the actors?
The planning aspect of Matsumoto's stage play gave me candidate photos for the actor and asked me to choose it myself. In fact, stage drama has always been my wish when I was a child, which is my wish. I love music very much, and I've been obsessed with music since I was a kid, whether it's ballads or rock 'n' roll. So I've always wanted to be able to create "three-dimensional" works that combine lines, pictures, music, and art scenes, and it's because of this idea that I'm also actively involved in live-action dramas.
- There are many powerful, kind, and beautiful female characters in your work, so do these characters have archetypes to follow in reality?
However, Matsumoto does not mean that this role corresponds to one of the characters, but the character born of the combination of many people. Some of them may be people I saw in the albums of my ancestors a long time ago, or they or the women around them, and sometimes I wonder if it is because I have inherited the genes of my ancestors, and some people, even if I have not seen their pictures before, will more or less feel that this person exists in reality after painting them. Once, I found a photograph at home that had been preserved for more than 100 years and was taken using daguerreotype photography, which my grandfather had taken at the time, and I had not seen the photograph when I was painting it, and when I saw the photograph, "Eh, it's exactly the same as what I painted." "Even the costumes are painted consistently. Genes are terrible. So maybe my preferences are about the same as my ancestors, strong, kind, beautiful, although they will get the care of others when they are killed, but the problems are solved and overcome by themselves, and I also like such strong women.
- What is your favorite character in your work?
Matsumoto Medel, Amy Lardas, and the male characters are Hoshino Tetsuro, Harok, and his partner Toshiro.
- What about mascots?
Matsumoto's mascot was first mentioned in the bird (トリさん) in "I Am a Man" (男おいどん), and has since appeared in other works. The manga "I'm a Man" is based on my student days. When it comes to animals, there are animals in almost all my works, and I especially like cats, and my tabby cat "Mijun" (ミーくん) is now in its fourth generation.
- The next question is the final question, this year's theatrical version of the animation "Zero Century" has been publicly released, and the trilogy titled "Emilar Das", "Harock" and "Medel" will be released in turn from 2020 onwards. How did this huge project come about?
Matsumoto I also want to use the latest technology and the power of new people in the industry to make a new animation work, and I believe that I will be able to do a good job in this work. I still have very, very many wishes, and there are still many ideas that have not been realized, so I always can't stop, always thinking about what else I can do, I don't want to end like this, I want to do more new works, it is out of this idea that I started this work.
