According to an Italian news agency, Japanese manga artist Kitashi Matsumoto, who is internationally renowned for "Galaxy Express 999", was released from danger on the evening of November 16 after being seriously ill and having difficulty breathing in Turin, Italy.

According to the hospital where he was being treated, doctors inserted a breathing tube after Matsumoto, 81, was admitted to the emergency room on November 15.

Doctors reportedly removed the test tube at 4 p.m. on Nov. 16 because his condition had stabilized.

For now, the cartoonist needs to stay in the hospital for a few more days.

Matsumoto fell ill during an appearance at a cinema in Turin, where his Galaxy Express 999 was being staged. He was rushed to the hospital upon returning to the hotel.

Initially people suspected he had suffered a stroke. But the hospital said he had trouble breathing and had no stroke.

Matsumoto began visiting Italy on November 14 to participate in events commemorating the 40th anniversary of the first broadcast of his works. His comic series such as The Space Pirate Captain Herrock were popular in Italy.
