Wei Yuan wrote the Atlas of the Sea Kingdom for China, but promoted the Meiji Restoration

Wei Yuan was one of the first people in modern China to "open his eyes and see the world." More than 180 years ago, Wei Yuan came to Nanjing to serve as an aide to high-ranking officials such as He Changling and Tao Shu, and built a house by the side of Wulongtan, named "Xiaojuan A". Here Wei Yuan pondered the compilation of the Atlas of the Sea Kingdom. In 1832, Wei Yuanxiangzhong was located in Nanjing Qingliang Mountain under the Edge of WulongTan, the east side of Longpanli, known historically as "Poetry Lane", and purchased land to build a house. Later, it was built as a villa and used as a lecture office, and Wei Yuan took the name "XiaoJuan A", which was the title of the poem "Daya", "ScrollEr Quye, A Person Daye". On the east side of the small roll is the oolong pond of lakes and mountains. Wei Yuan lived here, often strolling along the edge of the pond or boating with friends, chanting poems and talking about state affairs. Speaking of Wei Yuan, of course, we have to start with the "Chart of the Sea Country". In June 1841, Lin Zexu, who was responsible for the defeat in the Opium War, was deposed by the Qing Daoguang Emperor and sent to the Ili region of Xinjiang. He passed through Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, and his old friend Wei Yuan crossed the river from Yangzhou to meet him and talk deeply day and night. It was also at this meeting that Lin Zexu gave Wei Yuan the materials such as "Four Continents Chronicle", "Macao Monthly" and "Yuedong Manuscript" that he had organized to be translated by hand when he was in Guangzhou, hoping that he would compile a world overview that met the needs of Chinese, so as to awaken the Chinese people and save the danger. Wei Yuan readily agreed. Later, Wei Yuan also participated in the historical records, Overseas Chinese experiences, foreign works, and recent Yituyi languages, and added Wei Yuan's personally written and titled "Preparing for the Sea", which was revised several times and finally became a book of 100 volumes. The small volume of Nanjing Longpanli is the residence where Wei Yuan's knowledge of the Sea Kingdom Tuzhi accumulated. It is a pity that such a book of awakening and salvation written for China did not attract the attention of the imperial court. On the contrary, the "Atlas of the Sea Kingdom" was rapidly introduced to Japan, which promoted the Meiji Restoration movement in Japan from "honoring the king" to "breaking the curtain and opening the country". After liberation, more and more people settled in the Komaki A family in Longpan, and the 1500 square meters of Komaki A and the pudu nunnery next to it were once squeezed into 40 households. Since 2009, Wei Yuan's former residence has been restored, and the house, doors, windows and courtyards have been restored to the same appearance as they were more than 180 years ago. Now, in the northwest corner of the courtyard, there is also a wax plum planted by Wei Yuan himself, numbered "578".
