Film Movement

Juliette Binoche, alias La Binoche, was one of the most famous actresses of her generation. As the first actress to win three major international film festival Grand Slams (Best Actress at the Cannes International Film Festival, Venice International Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival), she has starred in several acclaimed films in recent decades, having starred with Leos Carax, Abbas Kiarostami, Jean-Luc Godard and Krzyshtov Krzysztof Kieslowski and other directors collaborated. This year, she starred in four films with very different styles: Words and Pictures, Godzilla, and Sils Maria. Clouds of Sils Maria and 1,000 Times Good Night. We sat down to talk to the beloved actress about the untrustworthiness of the performance view and the internet. "A Thousand Times Good Night" is her most recent film, which was screened in some theaters on October 24 and can be viewed on video-on-demand platforms.

In a recent interview, you mentioned that during filmmaking, you didn't like to talk to directors because they needed to think and were too distracted.

In the process of filming, such as at the beginning of a scene. If it was a month before the shooting, several days or a week ago, I could talk about anything. You need to analyze and understand what you're doing, depending on what movie you're making, but I'm willing to join in any discussion. When shooting, it's a different story, it's a special period. As an actor, you have to give up your will. Explore something new on yourself. It's a way of controlling, you know? Will is a way of controlling, and I feel as if I'm creating something, and all you have to do is jump into the unknown. So when you jump and a director tries to control it instead, it's counterproductive! [Laughs]

Stills from the film "A Thousand Good Nights"

In the film "A Thousand Good Nights", you are the communicator of the film's director. The interpretation is the director's personal experience. Given that the director and the film have such a deep, personal connection, how did you get into the role? Is there a problem with control?

This, first of all we have the script, so I will refer to the script. At the same time, I did a lot of research, and even during the shooting, I was still thinking about some scenes, discussing with a lot of reporters and photographers, because there were some things I couldn't believe, I needed to know why and in what language I needed to express. If you're playing someone like this who lives in today's world, you have to have accurate factual support. It can be emotional, but it has to be well-founded, and you need to know how emotions arise and what language you want to use in such a situation. When I first read the script, I felt that even though Erik Poppe was a war photographer, his views stuck 20 years ago. Many years ago, he did not have a career as a war photographer. Instead, I started working as a director and made a lot of films. There are some details that we need to consider. He knew I was in high spirits. It takes some time and we have to work on it. So there was a lot of repetition before filming, but once he somehow understood my need to play the role, he trusted me. The relationship is creative and abundant.

You have a brilliant career and are considered one of the most outstanding actresses of your generation, if not to this day. Will these compliments about performance affect you? Or do you choose to ignore it?

I feel like almost every film is a process of hard work. I didn't say it was easy. Make one movie, one film, one more, the next one, each time a journey. It didn't happen overnight, it seemed like there was a broad road in front of me, and I just had to take a step. Not at all. When I worked with Abbas Kiarostami, he said, "Come with me to Iran," and I said, "Are you crazy?" I've read the newspapers, do you think I'm going to Iran? He said, "It's not like it's in the newspapers, you just come and see it." "So I went. twice. Did you know that Abbas never wanted to work with an actor, let alone a French actress? He never thought about it. With Bruno Dumont, who usually works with non-professional actors, I mean when he made the film Camille in 1915, you probably hadn't heard of it.

Film "Camille of 1915"

I've seen it, and there are screenings on film forums.

Yeah. I went to see Bruno and I said I wanted to work with him. I was surprised that he meant it. Before that, he had never worked with a professional actor. So was Hou Xiaoxian. Nor has he ever worked with a professional actor. Every movie is hard-won. A lot of times, it's me looking for a movie. Creation is produced to some extent, and to another extent it is also a muse, because it inspires and needs to be inspired. For example, in the film "Sils Maria". Of course, there are also some films that come to me, like Words and Images, but this is different. It's another style of film in my acting career.

When you look back at your acting career, the film "Godzilla" is relatively prominent, it is not the style of "1915 Camille". Did you find them to play the role?

[Laughs] No, they found me. Because Gareth Edwards wrote me an emotional letter.

Do you like your short, dramatic scene in the film?

[Laughs] I don't know if you can still have fun when you have to die in two seconds. But you're the female character and you die in 3 minutes and 45 seconds.

The best three minutes of this film.

Oh, [Quentin] Tarantino said to me, "This is the first time I've shed a tear while watching a 3D blockbuster." I had to take off my glasses to wipe my tears. I took his words as a compliment.

Sils Maria is ifC Films

Recently, you and Kristen Stewart appeared on the cover of Interview Magazine magazine, and the article was mainly about you still sexy in the years of confusion. What do you think about that?

I really don't realize this, I think it's better not to have this awareness. I have not seen this report because it is in the Russian or German version. How do you see that? Did you ask someone else to translate this report?

There is the Internet. The news spread quickly online.

[Laughs] Really? internet. [Shake your head]

You mentioned Abbas Chiaras Dami before. According to online legend, although it is a bit risky to start with this, you are working with him on a movie?

No, no, I don't work with him right now. I do have this idea, but there are no plans at the moment.

So, the news on the Internet is fake. Just like in the movie "Sils Maria".

He is now making a film in China about a female cleaner who is responsible for the sanitation of thousands of rooms in a building.

In the film Sils Maria, you play an elderly actress who is somehow threatened by a young actress. I don't expect you to be really threatened by Kristen Stewart or Chloe Moretz. Did you take on the role of mentor or teacher during the filming process?

It's interesting because I saw it in an interview — I don't watch it very often, and Olivier said that sometimes I embarrass Christine and teach her how to perform. As far as I'm concerned, it's never been that way. Sometimes I push her because I know her potential. You know, it's very exciting to push certain people as an actor. Deep down, I felt that one day I wanted to take on the role of a teacher. It's about parenting, procreation, and sometimes the role of a midwife, which is well rewarded in some unseen places. When you see someone transform and grow, that's rewarding because it gives hope. Working with Christine, she showed her acting skills in the film, and I'm sure she never knew how good she was. In fact, I've seen her in some interviews, the way she listens and answers questions, and I can say, "This is a great actress." "It's the way she receives and feedback information. I believe that there is a brilliant career waiting for her in the future, and she will bring us surprises.

How to teach acting?

The performance is about leading the door. It's not really about teaching anything. It's about finding a breakthrough. Many actors want to perform and prove that they are actors. The role of the teacher is to show them that you do not perform. What is needed is to let go and act. Letting go and acting is more interesting than trying to do other things. It runs through your body, and it allows the life force to run through your body. Because you show its own appearance, of course, the key is to have the ability to let go and act.

Did someone lead you through the door?

Yes, when I was 18, I had a wonderful teacher. What I was doing was what I just mentioned, and I was always trying to prove myself an actor, and the awareness was so strong that every time I tried to do something she would stop me. This consciousness was so intense that I didn't know what to do, and then I really couldn't do anything about it. Inside me
