Changle has a history of nearly two thousand years

The earliest record of Changle appears in the Three Kingdoms period, nearly two thousand years ago. During the Three Kingdoms period, Eastern Wu set up a lieutenant at Wuhangtou (present-day Wuhang Subdistrict, Changle District), and gathered the Eastern Han Dynasty who migrated (criminals) to build ships here. Changle was also known as Wu Hang.

During the Reign of Emperor Hui of the Jin Dynasty, the Department of Yangzhou was divided into Jian'an Commandery (建安郡) and Jin'an Commandery (晋安郡), changle (present-day Fuzhou) of Jin'an Commandery (present-day Fuzhou), and Wei and Jin dynasties were: Heyang Township (i.e., present-day Wuhang Subdistrict), Daiyang Township (present-day Daibian Village, Shouzhan Township), Beiyan Township (present-day Tantou Jinfeng Junction), Jinping Township (present-day Luolian Township), Fang'an Township (i.e., northwest of present-day Jiangtian Township), Changyang Township (i.e., the area around present-day Beishan Village), and Changle Township (present-day Shajing Village).

During the Sui Dynasty, Jin'an County was changed to Jian'an County, and Changle belonged to Min County.

Changle County began in the sixth year of Tang Wude (623), separated from Min County to Xinning County, the county was governed by Dunsuri Pingchuan (present-day Guhuai Town), under the jurisdiction of Quanzhou (present-day Fuzhou). In the same year, he took the meaning of Chang'an Jiule and changed his name to Changle County.

In the first year of the First Yuan Dynasty (760), the administration of Changle County was moved to Wuhangtou (present-day Wuhang Subdistrict). In the third year of Yuan He (808), Changle County was merged into Futang County (present-day Fuqing). In the fifth year of Yuan He (810), Changle County was restored.

In February 1994, Changle County was established as a city, still under the jurisdiction of Fuzhou City. On November 6, 2017, Changle was withdrawn from the city and set up a district.

Zheng He's seven voyages to the West were all stationed in Changle

At the top of Changle South Mountain, the Shengshou Pagoda stands for a thousand years. At that time, the mighty Zheng He fleet used this tower as a navigation marker to pass through Taiping Port. Zheng He's seven voyages to the West were all stationed in Changle, and he climbed the tower many times and looked at it from afar.

In the 1930s, not far from the Shengshou Pagoda, a stone stele was unearthed, which caused a sensation at home and abroad. This stele of "The Record of Heavenly Princess Lingying" published by Zheng He records an unprecedented seafaring feat and has become a precious historical relic.

The "Record of the Heavenly Princess Lingying" stele, commonly known as the "Zheng He Monument". In the sixth year of The Great Ming Dynasty (1431 AD), the eunuchs Zheng He and Wang Jinghong, as well as the deputy eunuchs Li Xing and Zhu Liang, on the eve of the seventh mission to the West, stationed in Changle to wait for the monsoon to open the ocean, and after rebuilding the Tianfei Palace and the Sanfeng Pagoda Temple in Changle Nanshan and building the Sanqing Treasure Hall, the "Record of the Heavenly Concubine Lingying" was engraved in the Nanshan Palace. The stele is made of black shale, which is 1.62 meters high, 0.78 meters wide and 0.16 meters thick.

The inscription records that between the third year of Ming Yongle and the sixth year of Xuande (1405-1431 AD), the eunuch Zheng Hefeng commanded more than 100 ocean-going ships and went to the West seven times with advanced navigation technology.

Another national key cultural protection unit associated with Zheng He, the Xianying Palace, a thousand-year-old ancient palace of the Song Dynasty, is located on the xianqi coast of Changle Zhanggang, 48 kilometers from the center of Fuzhou. Xianying Palace was built in the eighth year of Song Shaoxing (1138) and buried underground around the time of the Qing Dynasty due to a huge natural disaster. On June 22, 1992, the ruins of the ancient palace were discovered by chance and the whole was excavated. The statue of the king of the sea patrol enshrined in the Xianying Palace has been called the only clay statue of Zheng He in the world by scholars.
