So Wang Fulin immediately set up a screenwriting team, determined the direction of adaptation, on the basis of fully respecting the original work, and at the same time referred to the valuable historical materials in the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", adapted the novel of 120 chapters into an 80-episode script, and the large framework consisted of five parts: the battle of the heroes, the battle of Chibi, the three-legged Dingli, the southern expedition to the north, and the three points to the Jin Dynasty.

Zhuge Liang's final actor is Tang Guoqiang. But at that time, the crew went to great lengths for the actor of Zhuge Liang's role.
Originally, the actor set by Zhuge Liang was Pu Cunxin, when he wanted to shoot another play, he refused, after many choices, against the pressure and doubts of the radio and television to ask for a change of actors by the masses, director Wang Fulin finally decided to let Tang Guoqiang, whose career was at a low point at that time, play Zhuge Liang.
And at that time, Tang Guoqiang very much wanted to lose the label of "cream boy" through a film and television drama, so he was extra careful about the role of this play. When I went home, I practiced my lines hard, studied the opera version of the Three Kingdoms, studied how Zhuge Liang shook the fan, and how to shape his personality.

As for the role of Cao Cao, there were many actors competing for the role of Cao Cao at that time, and Bao Guoan was filming "The Famous Face of the Tang Dynasty", so he did not compete for this role. Who would have thought that one day, he suddenly received a call from the assistant director of the crew, saying that the crew had listed him as one of the candidates for "Cao Cao". Because the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" drama pursues a realistic style, and due to the limitations of shooting conditions in the 1990s, many shots are completed at one time, so many scenes and props can only be filmed by real practice.
At that time, they were 4 people living in a room, Bao Guoan was faced with the dilemma of changing "tenants" frequently, and every new person had to ask him for advice and chat, which made it difficult for him to sleep and read the script, so he once went to the production director to "theory".

For Sun Yanjun, who plays Liu Bei, the most painful thing is the crying scene, Liu Bei's crying scene is too much, and every time he has to cry differently, the director specially designed a lot of different crying methods for him, and the scene where guan Yu was lost, he cried and fainted again and again.
Lu Shuming, the actor of Guan Yu, once said that playing Guan Yu almost disfigured him.
