The Shanghai Second Intermediate People's Court held that the defendant Chen Liwei, in order to escape after the accident, knew that his actions would cause serious consequences, and still drove a motor vehicle on the city road at high speed, changed lanes many times, and rushed into red lights at intersections, seriously endangering public safety, causing many casualties and property losses, and his behavior has constituted the crime of endangering public safety by dangerous means. Accordingly, defendant Chen Liwei was sentenced to death for endangering public safety by dangerous means and deprived of his political rights for life.
The victims, their families, and the defendants' families observed the pronouncement of the verdict.
