He is a famous historian, educator and master of traditional Chinese studies in China, who has been engaged in teaching for 74 years and served as the president of the university for 46 years, which has greatly promoted the development of yuan history, historical philology, religious history and other fields. He is Chen Yuan, the pride of the people of Jiangmen.

In Stone Village, Tangxia Town, Pengjiang District, Chen Yuan's former residence is the most famous ancient building here, also known as Chen Ningyuantang Sanzhai. Here we witnessed the birth and growth of Chen Yuan, recording the next precious moment. Today, this building has become a patriotic education base in Jiangmen City, and it is also a tourist attraction for future generations to honor their ancestors.

Made pioneering contributions in a number of areas

In 1880, Chen Yuan was born in Chen Ningyuantang, the ancestral home of his grandfather Chen Haixue, and went to Guangzhou with his father at the age of 5, and entered a private school at the age of 6. After growing up, Chen Yuan returned to his hometown many times, and in 1906 he also taught at Huangzhuang Primary School in Pengjiang District.

Chen Yuan did not receive formal historical education, but relied on diligence and the spirit of exploration, his works were rich, he was known as "the world scholar of modern China", and made pioneering contributions to the research of Chinese religious history, Yuan history, Chinese and Western transportation history and historical philology, and became a world-renowned historian. Many of his works have become classics in the field of historiography, and some have been translated into English and Japanese and published in the United States, Germany, and Japan.

Chen Yuan was not only a great historian, but also an outstanding educator. He was a professor and tutor of National Peking University, Peking Normal University and Fu Jen University, and has been engaged in teaching for 74 years in his life, teaching private schools, primary schools, middle schools, and universities, and serving as the president of the university for 46 years.

Chen Yuan is very responsible for teaching, has advanced educational concepts, he pioneered the "Selected Reading of Historical Masterpieces" and "Historical Source Practice" courses, as the basic courses for learning history, can lay a solid foundation for students in reading, searching books, tracing sources, and examining evidence, and improve their ability to conduct independent research. These two courses are still in use today and become part of the compulsory courses of the Department of History. At the same time, when he studied historical documents, he paid great attention to the study of catalog collation and the use of reference books, and his published "Chinese and Western Hui History Calendar" and "Twenty Shi Shuo Leap Tables" have also become indispensable and important reference books for studying and studying history.

The former residence is located in Stone Village, Tangxia Town

From the city, drive all the way to Huasheng Road in Tangxia Town, and follow the "Chen Yuan's Former Residence" sign on the side of the road to reach the former residence of Chen Yuan in Stone Village. What you see here is actually only a small part of Chen NingyuanTang, and Chen Yuan's former residence is actually the three houses of the Chen family manor "Ningyuantang".

Chen Ningyuan Hall was built during the Qing Dynasty and funded by Chen Yuan's grandfather Chen Hai, and is a rare private manor of the Qing Dynasty in Jiangmen, and was designated as a cultural relics protection unit in Guangdong Province in 2004. Chen Ningyuan Hall is surrounded by mountains on three sides, with an orchard, Taihe Hall (free distribution of medicines), a swimming pool (now a pond in front of the former residence), 12 houses for nine sons, a water tower, a library, a large kitchen, and a garden and pavilion in the back, just like a mountain manor.

Chen Yuan's former residence is one of these 12 residences, commonly known as Chen Ningyuantang Sanzhai. This is a Qing Dynasty brick and wood structure of the residential building, single-storey bungalow, one hall, four bedrooms and two corridors, with a patio in front of the hall, with a construction area of 141.8 square meters. The pond in front of the former residence is hidden, surrounded by low rocks and low trees, lush grass and trees, and the scenery is quiet. In front of the former residence, there is a sculpture of Chen Yuan, on which Chen Yuan's face is kind and kind, and his eyes are shining.

Chen Yuan's former residence has been repaired many times, not only on both sides of the road to add signs, street lamps, toilets and other supporting facilities, the gate, wall and surrounding area have also been repaired to be more open.

In 2002, Chen Yuan's former residence was approved and announced by the People's Government of Guangdong Province as one of the fourth batch of cultural relics protection units in Guangdong Province.

On the west side of the former residence, the Chen Yuan Memorial Hall was built

In 2010, the Pengjiang District Government built the Chen Yuan Memorial Hall on the west side of Chen Yuan's former residence, which is located in the four houses of Chen Ningyuan Hall, which was destroyed in the early years.

According to reports, the construction of the Chen Yuan Memorial Hall, the architectural design pays attention to the integration with the former residence of Chen Yuan, in accordance with the principle of repairing the old as old, maintaining the original architectural style of the former residence. The memorial hall has a "Li Yun Book House", which enriches and perfects the literary materials and photos that introduce Mr. Chen Yuan. On November 12, 2010, the completed Chen Yuan Memorial Hall was officially opened to the public free of charge at the commemoration of the 130th anniversary of Mr. Chen Yuan's birth.

Today's Chen Yuan Memorial Hall is a common Lingnan small courtyard structure, single-storey bungalows, one hall, four bedrooms and two corridors, all rooms are about Mr. Chen Yuan's life information. Nearly 30 precious cultural relics are on display in the Chen Yuan Memorial Hall, including the original biography of Chen Yuan's disciple, painter and calligrapher Qi Gong who wrote for the bronze statue of his mentor at the age of 90; the original homework that Chen Yuan corrected for history students at Fu Jen University in 1949; and the original manuscript of Chen Yuan.
