Huang Zongxi of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties was the eldest son of Huang Zunsu, one of the "Seven Gentlemen of Donglin", and together with Gu Yanwu and Wang Fuzhi, he was called "the three great thinkers of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties". He put forward the proposition that "the world is the mainstay and the king is the guest", saying that "the rule of chaos under the heavens is not the rise and fall of one surname, but the sorrow and happiness of all the people", and advocated replacing the emperor's "law of one family" with the "law of the world", so as to limit the power of the monarch and ensure the basic rights of the people.
Huang Zongxi is a typical self-taught talent. He resented the study of the imperial examination and wanted to completely reform the system. He also often traveled the streets and alleys, looking for books to buy books, and the bookmakers had to carry a bag of books home almost every day. He made a name for himself overnight, and then went out to buy it the next day, so it became a habit.
In his later years, Huang Zongxi preferred to collect books and copy books. He also copied fan's Tianyi Pavilion, Zheng's Congzhu Hall, Cao's Jingti Hall, and Xu's Biography lou collection.
