Kunming, 29 Feb (Xinhua) -- On 28 February, a Yunnan court pronounced judgment on a number of major cases involving wildlife, and defendant Si Mou was sentenced to ten years in prison for illegally transporting 146 parrots.

On February 28, the Kunming Intermediate People's Court pronounced a verdict on a case involving the protection of wildlife resources. The court found that on April 4, 2018, defendant Si Mou drove to the vicinity of Zhangfeng Port in Longchuan County, Dehong Dai Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, received a batch of Alexander parrots, and then transported them to the Freight Department of Tengchong Hump Airport, and used other people's ID cards to handle the consignment procedures, sending parrots from Tengchong to Chengdu via Kunming. On April 8, 2018, the parrots were seized by the public security police at Kunming Changshui International Airport, and a total of 146 parrots were counted at the scene. After identification, they are all Alexander parrots, which belong to the national second-level key protected animals and are listed in the appendix of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, with a value of 1.46 million yuan. On this basis, the court of first instance found defendant Si X guilty of illegally transporting precious and endangered wild animals and sentenced him to 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of 30,000 yuan. After the judgment was pronounced, defendant Si X filed an appeal, and the Kunming Intermediate People's Court ruled in the second instance to reject the appeal and uphold the original judgment.
