According to the New Zealand Skyway Network on February 25, Carla Ferguson and Mitch Smith, a couple living in Huntly, New Zealand's North Island, can't believe that there is a nightmare hidden in the wall behind the oven of their new home... Behind this wall, there is a densely packed giant hive up to 1 meter wide. The couple couldn't believe their eyes.
Carla said that the cat in the family first noticed that something was wrong, and after moving over, the cat always stared at the wall. Later, she once saw about a dozen horse bees flying under the kitchen lamp.
"At first we thought it was bees and didn't want to kill them. Then we brought in beekeepers, and when they looked at them, they said, 'No, these are horse bees,'" Carla said.
Pest removal specialist Robbie Stapleton then came to help the couple with their examination. He estimates that there may be as many as 7,000 European or German wasps that have lived within the wall for 6 months to 1 year.
At first, Robbie eliminated some of the wasps, but then found that there were not only adult wasps in the house, but also from larvae to near-hatching.
"As he opened the wall, we saw a lot of pony bees trying to emerge from their cocoons. It was horrible! Fortunately, the couple found out in time that no one in the family, including their 14-month-old baby daughter, had been harmed. Their cats and dogs are safe.
After taking a closer look at the hive, Robbie said, "It's definitely a big hive, the largest I've ever seen, and it's built into the kitchen wall, which is very special."
The entire hive was measured to be 1.1 meters long and 10 centimeters thick.
Robbie said that although this situation is not common, he is not particularly surprised to find wasps in the walls, because the wasps like warm environments.
It is reported that wasps like food scraps, sugary liquids, but also like picnics, barbecues and trash cans.
