In order to truly reflect the intelligence warfare between the enemy and me, I will only tell a true story that I have personally experienced. The title is quite large, saying that it is indeed a small thing, but it is big in small things, and it is known in small ways. It can fully explain the relevant situation on the intelligence front in that year.
On January 27, 1984, the 26th Regiment of the First Artillery Division sent an advance force to longzhou County, Guangxi Province, to carry out the advance task, the regimental commander was led by Deputy Regiment Commander Zhang Guilu, the head of the headquarters was Deputy Chief of Staff Huang Zefei, the regimental command company was led by me, there were reconnaissance platoons, a total of 40 people in the ground survey platoon, and all the advance troops had five vehicles and 88 people.

On February 10 and 11, the large troops arrived in multiple echelons, and in order to conceal strategic attempts and prevent Vietnamese spies from spying on military intelligence, they did not go directly to the border, but reached Chongzuo, 120 kilometers away from the border line, stationed at the Dongluo Mining Bureau.
I had been on reconnaissance missions at Heights 428, 569, 561 and 600 on the border line, and on March 15 I received orders to withdraw to the Dongluo Mining Bureau to join the large forces.
On April 2, the battle of Maoshan began, the 26th Regiment rushed to the border, occupied the position, the regiment command was located in the 428 heights, the reconnaissance platoon of our company went to the 428 highlands to carry out the task, and the other personnel were all hidden in the Gourd Valley east of Dongyin Village in Xiadong Town.
On April 20, I received a call from Du Zhaoqing, chief of staff of the regiment (a native of Baxian County, Hebei Province, a soldier of 71 years), telling me to send it to the command post, and stressing: "The car sent to the regiment must arrive before four o'clock in the afternoon, and the enemy begins shelling at four o'clock." "I promised it with all my mouth, but I began shelling the enemy at four o'clock, and I was suspicious, because I had already sent several supplies, and besides, I had been on the border line for four months, so I did not care about the four o'clock prescribed to me by the chief of staff.
I first took the car to the lower town to install supplies, because I had not taken a bath in the past 20 days, and the four people who went with me said that they wanted to take a bath, and I also wanted to take a bath. Looking around, seeing that the shower room of the next tax office was very good, I went in to take a bath, and did not tell people, I guess they saw us dirty, dirty, bearded, carrying guns, grenades, like fierce gods, will not drive us away.
Because of the weapons and supplies, they had to be washed in two batches, and when everyone was washed, they immediately drove back. After reaching the Five Finger Mountain, there was a fork in the north of the mountain, and the right road went northwest to the layout pass, and in 1979, the 124th Division of the 42nd Army crossed the border line from here and killed Gaoping, and the left road reached the spear mountain to the southwest.
Our vehicle had just walked a few hundred meters west from the fork of Wuzhishan Mountain, when suddenly there was an explosion of "bang", and a shell exploded six or seven hundred meters from the right side of our vehicle. As soon as I looked at my watch, it was exactly four o'clock, and I couldn't help but exclaim: "The intelligence is really accurate!" The firing of enemy artillery positions was also immediately heard, crisp and high-pitched. I saw that the explosion point was not large, heard the sound of firing, and immediately judged that it was a cannon, and the caliber should be 76, 2 Soviet cannon, or 85 cannon. Because the initial speed of the cannon is large, the shells explode first, and the sound of the gun muzzle and the sharp sound of the shell flying through the air arrive, it is generally impossible to hide, and not all the shells can be heard to avoid.

The driver saw the shell explode and immediately rushed to refuel, because the road was not wide, the road conditions were poor, and the speed of the car was dangerous. The driver had not participated in 79 years of combat, and had little knowledge of the battlefield, so when he heard me say this, he slightly stabilized his nerves. Another shell landed a few hundred meters behind the car and exploded, basically my car, the explosion point, the enemy's artillery sound on the line, I suspect that the enemy is coming at our car, test firing at us. I was shocked and scolded: "Obedient, Wang Eight Lambs is capable and capable of shooting sports targets." ”
There was a grove of trees on the left side of the road, and the driver was immediately told to drive into the woods to hide until the enemy observation post on spear hill could not be seen from the car. After the enemy continued to shell, from test firing to effective firing, it was only then that they had come to our artillery position of "Stick Yang" (place name). Not to rush our vehicles. Because our artillery positions were all fortified and could only be destroyed by directly hitting the gun positions, the enemy's shelling did not cause losses to our regiment. Seeing that the enemy was not shelling us, we continued on our way and arrived at the 428 command post without hurrying or slowing down.
After the car arrived at the command post, unloaded its supplies, went to find the chief of staff Du Zhaoqing to resume his life, and was severely criticized, I knew that I had made a mistake, stood up straight, and did not dare to say a word.
Five days later, I was sent to the regimental command post, and one day, seeing that Chief of Staff Du was in a very good mood, I rushed to the front and asked with a smile: "Chief of Staff, that day you said that the enemy opened fire at four o'clock, and the intelligence was really accurate, how do you know?" ”
The chief of staff smiled slyly: "This is confidential. Don't ask about things you shouldn't know, and don't ask what you shouldn't ask. ”
I touched a nose of ash, a little embarrassed, and Chief of Staff Du also felt that it was not very good, and then followed up with a sentence: "I will tell you again in the future." "It was put down, but it was always a mystery in my heart.

I also once asked my staff officers under Chief of Staff Du during the war in my comrades-in-arms, and no one remembered this. It was a great pity that the old chief took this secret to the grave.
