(Original Forward Wenjing Philosophical History June 23)

Liu Hu (1857~1909), the author of the famous late Qing Dynasty condemnation novel "The Journey of the Old Remnant", nicknamed Hongdu Bailiansheng, was a late Qing Dynasty prodigy, a generation of historical and cultural celebrities, and a foreign affairs faction that was also an official and a businessman.

Because the Eight-Power Alliance had caused the capital to suffer, he bought "Taicang millet" at a low price from the Russian invading army to help the victims of the disaster, and was framed by the Qing court as a "traitor", far away from Xinjiang, suddenly died in the Shushu, and only lived for 52 years. The death of Liu Hu became an unjust case in the late Qing Dynasty.

At the age of five, Liu Hu studied with his father in Henan, where he was employed.

He was the youngest of his siblings, and he grew up with a young age when he was literate and gifted.

The young Liu Yan was in the darkest years of the qing dynasty's most decaying and decaying, and the Western powers wanted to divide China with their eyes, and through various means and means, coerced the corrupt Qing government and signed various unequal treaties that humiliated the country.

In the late autumn of 1877, Liu E participated in the township examination and immediately returned to Huai'an.

Liu E, who returned to Huai'an, just as Jin'ao fished back to the sea and got rid of the shackles of the official eunuch family, he wanted to follow his own wishes, take his own path, and do a career.

Huai'an, the place where the "South Ship and North Horse" meets, is one of the four important cities on the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Line with Hangzhou, Yangzhou and Suzhou, and is also a place where humanities gather.

Once, Liu Hu and his servant Li Gui were in the street when they found a keel (Chinese medicine) in the slag of medicine that had fallen on the road, which recorded ancient texts. Liu Yan found the pharmacy and told the shopkeeper that this was not a keel but a turtle shell.

The shopkeeper sold him all the turtle shells stored in the shop and told him that the turtle shells were found by the peasants in the countryside.

Therefore, Liu Hu followed the vine to touch the melon, and sure enough, he bought a lot of them among the villagers outside the East Gate of Huai'an.

In addition to buying a lot in Henan at first, I later bought thousands of tablets in Shandong, a total of five or six thousand pieces.

Liu Hu took the turtle shell every night, studied and identified the text on it, and finally compiled it into "Iron Cloud Hidden Turtle".

In 1888 (the fourteenth year of Qing Guangxu), the Mouth of the Yellow River in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, was already a number of easy supervisors, and could not be closed for a long time.

Liu Hu saw the river governor Wu Daji and proposed his own strategy for curing the river and the dragon, which was greatly praised by the river governor and entrusted with a heavy responsibility.

Liu Hu personally went up to the embankment "short clothes and horses, and miscellaneous servants" to boost morale. Soon, great results were achieved, and "reputation rose".

In 1891, due to his meritorious service in governing the river, Liu E was transferred to Jinan by Zhang Yaohuan, the governor of Shandong, and served as a dispatcher in the lower reaches of the Yellow River in Shandong with the title of Tongzhi. He became an accomplished water conservancy expert at the time.

In 1892, due to the death of his mother, he returned to Huai'an. After serving the full, Furun, the inspector of Shandong, sponsored the prime minister Yamen with "miraculous talents and extraordinary abilities".

In June 1900, the Eight-Power Alliance invaded and occupied Beijing and Tianjin, and "the great calamity was sudden, and the people of Beijing and Tianjin had no funds when they left, and there was no food if they stayed." At the beginning of the month, Xiyou came to the clouds from the Capital Division and saw that in the jingguan's house, the man had fled, the woman had committed suicide, and the corpses were all over the place; there was a gate closed, and the whole family starved to death. I don't know its tears. ”

Liu Hu lived in Shanghai at that time, heard about the suffering of compatriots in Beijing and Tianjin, and could not sleep at night, and he was determined to express his family's disaster relief.

The next day, he immediately searched for his family and sold 12,000 taels of Huai'antian property, and wrote to Lu Shufan, one of the founders of the "China Relief Charity Society" (later the Chinese Red Cross Society), which was founded by the people at that time: "Brother Han Shiye, block everything, a total of 12,000 taels, is willing to use it for relief to Beijing." ”

He also said: "As far as the land is concerned, Beijing is the most urgent, and as far as things are concerned, Beijing is the most difficult, if no one goes, the brother is willing to serve." ”

On the 18th, Liu Hu arrived in Beijing.

The first solution to the disaster relief is to sympathize with the victims who are dying without warning, distribute free of charge "civilian men and women who live in the daily grain collection, no less than tens of thousands of mouths, quite crowded" (Liu Yan's diary), and set up a pingyu bureau to stabilize grain prices.

At the same time, "first bury the corpses on the street, and then collect the corpses in the courtyard" (Liu Hu's diary).

This is followed by the prevention and control of the plague.

This is the biggest action of non-governmental disaster relief in modern China.

Liu Hu's entire disaster relief activities were carried out under the fierce gun stabbing of the occupying forces.

In the spring of 1901, due to traffic obstructions in the south, the grain supply was cut off, and the relief money from various places did not arrive.

Liu Yan was very anxious, and suddenly received news: the Russian army occupying the shipping warehouse (the Imperial Warehouse of the Qing Dynasty, that is, Taicang Millet), because it did not eat rice, was ready to burn the rice and use the warehouse as a barracks.

Liu Yan immediately took advantage of his social relations and familiarity with the embassies of various countries to buy this batch of rice at a low price, ensuring the supply of food for disaster relief and saving the people.

Before and after the "Penghu Coup" at the end of the Qing Dynasty, the democratic and progressive ideas of reforming the government and government, striving to be strong, and benefiting the people sprouted among the scholars and doctors of the government and the people, and gradually formed a shilin atmosphere.

Liu is an active advocate.

He opposed the Qing government's corruption of "harsh government and disturbing the people" and demanded clarification of the rule of officials.

And because the "Journey of the Old Remnant" exposed the scars of the Qing court, the Qing court had long regarded Liu Hu as a thorn in the eye, especially Yuan Shikai.

Twenty years ago, Liu Hu and Yuan Shikai worked together in shandong he engineering, and Yuan's inspector Zhang Gong was befriended by his sons, who stayed around and did not send them out, so they were distraught.

When Liu E was trusted and reused by Zhang Gong, Yuan instructed Liu to recommend it to Zhang Gong, and Zhang believed: "Yuan Cai is cute but the sex is undecided. Capital can be made but not pure. Let the sole be indignant. "No.

Yuan therefore resented Liu Hu.

In addition, Shi Ji (the military aircraft minister of the late Qing Dynasty" "Gongbu Shilang"), who had been offended by Liu Hu's father, both of them entered the Military Aircraft Department in 1907, and had already looked at Liu Huhu and waited for an opportunity to take revenge.

In 1908 (the twenty-fourth year of Guangxu), he decided to open a knife on Liu Hu.

Liu Hu had received a secret letter from his friend Liu Yongnian, and the next day he quietly left Suzhou for Shanghai and stayed in a Hotel opened by Japanese in the concession.

Liu Stayed in the Shanghai Concession for half a month, and then sneaked back to Suzhou.

At the beginning of February, he went to Nanjing, and jointly operated the Sanzhou Land Company with Cheng Wenbing, the admiral of the Yangtze River, and purchased the wasteland of Jiuyuanzhou in Pukou.

This land was originally a privately owned area of Luzhou in the middle of the river.

Liu raised money from friends and relatives to buy the wasteland.

Not long after, the construction of the Jingpu Railway had been agreed, and Liu Yan donated 400 mu for the construction of stations and stacks, leaving 277 mu of land, planning to open up a commercial port for himself.

In the process of drawing up the plan, Chen Liu, a giant gentleman in Jiangpu County, was originally appointed by Yushi, and returned to his hometown to try to buy this piece of real estate from Liu Hu, but Liu Hu resolutely refused.

Chen Liu sought revenge and wrote to Wu Mou, the imperial historian of Jingzhong, falsely accusing him of "purchasing real estate for foreign companies".

On June 19, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs listed Four major crimes, including Liu Hu's "monopoly of mineral profits; theft and sale of warehouse rice; smuggling of salt for profit; and collusion with foreigners for profit."

Yuan Shikai secretly sent the governor of Liangjiang, Duan Fang, to order Chana.

After Liu Hu's arrest, Yuan immediately sent a telegram: "Temporarily sent to Dihua (present-day Urumqi) in Xinjiang, and imprisoned forever." ”

On the second day of the sixth month of the lunar calendar in 1908, it was liberated from Nanjing, first escorted by warship to Hankou, and then by land, through Hubei, Henan, and Gansu, braving the cold ice of the summer calendar, eating and sleeping in the wind, for nearly half a year, to Urumqi, Xinjiang, it was the early winter season.

The servant Li Gui (also known as Liu Gui) accompanied Liu Gui to Urumqi.

After Liu Hu arrived in Urumqi, because he was neither a royal nobleman nor a high-ranking official, and because he was a conservative, and he was working hard to curb the republican storm, Liu Hu, who was worried about the country and the people, had regarded Liu Hu, who was worried about the country and the people, as a "rebel", and would not sympathize with it.

Liu Yan lived in an abandoned stable that even the wind and rain could not cover.

Later, he and Li Gui defected to the City God Temple, and the abbot saw that he was a criminal who had studied and became an official, so he took him in.

When the incense in the temple was flourishing, Liu Hu helped the abbot copy the scriptures, run some errands, and beg for fasting to get by.

At that time, there was a Taoist monk named "Liu Long Legs" who also lived in the City God Temple.

This person is proficient in Qi Huang, and the people who come to the temple to seek medical treatment are endless all day long.

One day, a dying patient was lying on a recliner, and his family was crying and crying and asking Liu Daoshi for treatment.

Liu Daoshi diagnosed for half a day, and finally shook his head. Liu Yan saw the situation, went forward to touch the patient's pulse, looked at the tongue moss, and then prescribed a prescription to the patient's family, and instructed that only three doses need to be taken. The aftermath is the cure for the disease.

The news spread, and patients from all over the world came to seek treatment.

Liu Yan hung the pot to save the world, and the "criminal doctor" was famous.

However, he was always looking forward to it, and the Qing court would one day grant him amnesty and return to his hometown.

Later, unfavorable news came.

Liu Hu sighed, "Xiangcheng (Yuan Shikai) is in power, and I have no day of return."

His dream of amnesty was finally shattered.

Before the medical book "Life Life Anhe Ji" was written, Liu Hu suddenly suffered from cerebral hemorrhage in 1909 and died at the age of 52.

In 1911, the Xinhai Revolution broke out and the Qing government was overthrown.

Liu Dajin, the third son of Liu Hu, believes that the opportunity to wash away the wrongs of his father has finally arrived.

However, Liu Hu's unjust case remains unattended.

In 1934, when Mr. Cai Yuanpei of the Academia Sinica learned of this matter, he resolutely took over Liu Dajin's lawsuit and said: "Ling Xian's father was the best in the late Qing Dynasty, and his "Travels of the Old Remnant" was a representative work of the late Qing Dynasty condemning novels, exposing the corruption of the Qing government officials and the people's lack of livelihood, so it angered the Qing court, created false accusations, and made Ling Xian's father feel wronged. I will propose this unjust case to the National Government on your behalf. ”

Subsequently, Cai Yuanpei separately wrote to Wang Jingwei, then chairman of the National Government and chief executive, and Shi Ying, mayor of Nanjing, and Liu Hu "went unpunished" and "intended to ask the central authorities to review the old case, explicitly order Zhaoxue, and return 557 mu of private land in Pukou Jiuyuanzhou to seek redress of grievances."

The Nationalist Government sent personnel to find out that the real estate of Liu Hupukou Jiuyuanzhou had indeed been confiscated during the Guangxu years, but because the land it had been copied had been used by the commercial port, it was impossible to repay the original place.

Finally, the Executive Yuan instructed that some acres of land be allocated from other places to Liu Hu's descendants in order to maintain his livelihood, but it was not handled in accordance with Cai Yuanpei's suggestion that Liu Hu "clearly order ZhaoXue".

Although the Nationalist government did not completely rehabilitate Liu Hu in this unjust case, Mr. Cai Yuanpei's noble qualities of upholding justice and being helpful are admirable.
