Japanese Sengoku Micro History (7): Maori Motoyasu

author:Cat with cappuccino

The first generation of the Maori family was the fourth male Mori Yoshimitsu of Hiromoto Oe, the hero of the Kamakura shogunate' founding, Mori Motomoto, who was born in the Sagami Kingdom of Mori-shogunate, and the Oe clan has used literary talent as an accompaniment to the emperor for generations (senior companion reading child?). )。 Under the rule of the Yuan Dynasty alone, the Maori clan managed to rise from a minor lord of the Anyi Kingdom to the largest power in Western Japan that dominated the ten kingdoms of China (referring to the Yamayo Province and Yamanagi regions in the western part of Honshu Island, Japan), and was known as the "First Wise General of the Western Kingdom".

Maori Moto had always been subordinate to the Ouchi clan (the daimyō of the Seven Kingdoms of Western Japan), and at that time he was only half a minor lord of the Ahn Yun Kingdom, and could only be regarded as half a county magistrate, and had always been favored by the Ouchi clan. Suddenly, Tao Qingxian, a heavy minister of the Ouchi clan, suddenly "shimed up", killed Ouchi Yoshitaka, supported his nephew as a puppet, and retired to the background to take power. Although Mao Liyuan was dissatisfied and dared not speak out in anger, because of his poor strength, he had been hiding and not being able to bear it, and Taoguang was obscure. Three years later, Maori Yuan, who thought the time was ripe, officially declared war on Tao Qingxian and quickly captured several cities. The following year, the famous battle of Itsukushima in the history of the Japanese Warring States broke out, when the Maori side had only 4,000 troops, while Tao Qingxian mobilized 20,000 troops, because there were more naval battles, so it was also called the "Battle of the Barrel Narrow Space on the Sea".

Battle of Itsukushima

In this battle, Mao Liyuan fully demonstrated the style of the "First Wise General of the Western Kingdom", first using the divisive strategy, let Tao Qingxian kill his own general and cut off his arm. Then on the front line to build a castle (Miyao Castle), constantly let the wind this city vulnerable, let his henchmen lie that they want to cooperate with Tao Qingxian, under the temptation of such a serial plan, Tao Qingxian finally could not hold his breath, 20,000 troops poured out, in the naval battle, Maori Yuan got the strong support of Murakami Water Army (pirate born, similar to the Nine Ghosts Jialong), defeated Tao Qingxian in one fell swoop, thirty-five-year-old Tao Qingxian was defeated on Itsukushima and committed suicide. This great battle that determined the fate of the Maori and Tao families ended with the victory of the Maori side, but the victory of the Maori army was so thrilling, and the defeat of the Tao army under the absolute superiority of the troops was such a difficult classic battle in the Warring States period. Maori's victory with less than one-fifth of the enemy's strength was comparable only to Oda Nobunaga's performance in the Battle of the Barrel Pan. After the war, Morimoto rebuilt Itsukushima Shrine and is now one of the World Heritage Sites.

At that time, another powerful daimyō in Western Japan, Haruhisa, died, and his son Yoshihisa succeeded him as the governor of the house. Because of his ability, the last hope of revival of the Nizi family was also shattered. Under the mediation of Ashikaga Yoshiaki, Maorimoto reconciled with the Ōtomo clan of Western Kyushu and married his sons and daughters, and after relieving the threat to the west, Maorimoto attacked the Nizi clan with all his might, and several castles were successively laid down, and finally the group surrounded the Niziju castle of Tsukiyama Tomita. This siege was fought for a long time, during which Maori yuan once again used a counter-plot, so that Nizi Yoshihisa single-mindedly killed the father and son of the heavy minister Uyama Kuyuki, resulting in great confusion in the military and the situation became unmanageable. In the end, the Yoshihisa brothers had to go out of the city to surrender, and were later put under house arrest by Maori Yuan. During the long siege, Maori Takamoto (his eldest son, who had already ceded the position of governor to him at that time) died suddenly at the age of forty-one. Maori Moto temporarily left yamashiro, the battlefield county, to hold a formal ceremony for Takamoto's thirteen-year-old widow, Yukizuru Maru, and identified him as the new heir, changing his name to Maori Keigen. Three years later, Morimoto was busy resuming the war with the Otomo clan when bad news suddenly came that with the secret support of Oda Nobunaga, the Ten Warriors of the Niko Clan, Yamanaka Shikasuke Yukimori (nicknamed "Kirin of San'in", a model of loyal subjects), supported Niko Katsuhisa, and the Nishiko family was revived. Maori Yuan then let Hui Yuan, Yuan Chun, and Long Jing join forces to the east and attack to break through the Moon Mountain Tomita Castle again, but unfortunately the second destruction of the Nizi family, Yuan could not wait.

Faced with various unfavorable factors, Yuan quickly withdrew from Kyushu. As a result of years of conquest, Moto began to weaken in his old age, and eventually died of illness in Yamashiro, Yoshida County, at the age of 75. Maori Moto began to revitalize the country from a small local power in Yoshida Castle with an army of only 150 men (of course, because the western opponents were not too strong). The family letter written to the three children as a testament became the norm for the Maori family to act and was passed on to future generations for a long time. Its most famous is the "Three Arrows of Training", it is said that he used three arrows to educate his three sons, and his three sons were often disjointed (half-siblings) because of blood relations, so Maoriyuan took out a bow and arrow to teach them to be brothers and sisters, warning them that an arrow could easily be broken, and it was difficult to be broken when three arrows were together, so that they must be united, and the Maori family was more united from then on. The authenticity of the story now appears to be yet to be verified. However, Maori Yuan wrote in his family letter: "If the three of you are separated from each other, then you will perish together." After the death of Motoyasu Mori, Yoshikawa Motoharu and Kohayakawa Takakei kept Moto's instructions and fully supported Masamuro Keimoto to survive in the chaotic Warring States.

At the time of his death, Uesugi Kenshin was 41 years old, Takeda Shingen was 50 years old, Mitsuhide 43 years old, Oda Nobunaga was 37 years old, Toyotomi Hideyoshi was 35 years old, Tokugawa Ieyasu was 29 years old, Ishida Sansei was 11 years old, and Date Masamune was only a four-year-old child. As the first wise general in the Sengoku Western Japan, Maorimoto drove his excellent strategy and tactics and active foreign trade, and adhered to thorough realism in the Warring States. If there were still such a first-class wise general in the future, the world would not have fallen into the hands of Toyotomi Hideyoshi so easily. If Maorimoto had won the world, he would have made Hiroshima his capital, and the aggressive foreign trade strategy he advocated would have made Japan even stronger than today's policy of locking up the country pursued by Tokugawa Ieyasu.
