Chapter VI The Southern and Northern Dynasties of the Wei and Jin Dynasties

Chapter 20 Liu Yucheng Emperor Ye

In the last years of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the imperial family was fiercely contested for power. After Liu Yu helped Emperor An of Jin restore the throne, he seized power in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Originally, Liu Yu was born into poverty and had no status, but he had the ambition to make meritorious achievements.

"Born poor"

At the age of 15, Liu Yu's father died, and his stepmother took him and his two younger brothers to live a difficult life. Liu Yu could not survive, so he had to make straw shoes for food to maintain his family's livelihood. Although life was not satisfactory, he was very filial to his stepmother, preferring to go hungry himself rather than let his stepmother have no food.

Later, Liu Yu became a Soldier of the Northern Province in the Eastern Jin Dynasty.

Because of his outstanding performance, Liu Yu was soon promoted to Sima and then took control of the Northern Prefecture. When Huan Xuan established himself as emperor, Liu Yu raised an army to fight.

In 405, Sima Dezong, the emperor of Jin'an, returned to Jiankang, and Liu Yu was appointed as the governor of Yangzhou, Jingzhou, and Xuzhou, and became more powerful.

Four years later, Murong Chao of Southern Yan sent troops several times to attack, kill officials of the Eastern Jin court, rob finances, and make the people's lives unstable. Liu Yu requested the Northern Expedition to Southern Yan. Liu Yu set out from Jiankang and first sent troops to besiege the southern Yan capital of Guanggu (廣固, in modern Yidu, Shandong). Murong Chao, the ruler of Southern Yan, was in a hurry and asked Later Qin for help.

Yao Xing, the lord of the Later Qin State, sent an emissary to the Camp of the Jin Army to meet Liu Yu and said, "Your country and our Qin state are friendly neighbors. Now, we have sent 100,000 troops to Luoyang. You must attack the Yan Kingdom, we will not sit idly by and do nothing, you will watch and do it. ”

Listening to the emissary's threatening words, Liu Yu sneered and said, "I originally planned to destroy the Yan Kingdom and then destroy you after a three-year rest." Now it's time for you to deliver it. ”

Soon, Liu Yu eliminated Southern Yan, and Later Qin did not help Southern Yan.

After a few years, Liu Yu pacified the southern separatist forces and once again went north to attack Later Qin. He sent the generals Wang Zhenxi and Tan Daoji to lead infantry to attack in the direction of Luoyang, at this time, the Northern Wei established by the Xianbei tribe in the north began to grow stronger, and the power had reached the north bank of the Yellow River. Northern Wei gathered 100,000 troops on the north bank to threaten the Jin army. Liu Yu's army advanced along the Yellow River, and sometimes the wind was fierce, and the Ships of the Jin Army were attacked by the Wei Army when they were washed away to the north bank.

Liu Yu sent a water army to the north bank to attack the Wei army, and the Wei army fled, and when the Jin army returned to the ship, the Wei army harassed the north bank. After Liu Yu knew, he sent a general with 700 soldiers and 100 military vehicles to the north bank, and a semi-circular formation was formed along the coast, close to the riverbank, bulging out in the middle, and a white feather was erected on one of the military vehicles. Because this array is shaped like a moon hook, it is called "moon array".

Wei Jun observed the Jin army's deployment from a distance, did not understand what it meant, and did not dare to act rashly.

After a while, someone on the middle car of the Jin army raised white feathers, and 2,000 soldiers poured out on both sides, carrying 100 large bows, and ran to the military vehicle. The Wei army saw the position and concentrated its forces to attack the riverbank. The bows and arrows on the 100 military vehicles of the Jin army were fired in unison, but they still could not resist the Wei army.

Behind the Moon Array, the Jin army arranged more than 1,000 spears and mounted them on large bows. Each spear is three or four feet long, and the spearhead is particularly sharp. When the Wei army attacked the Jin army, the Jin army used a large iron hammer to strike a large bow, and the spear immediately flew towards the Wei army, each spear could shoot three or four people, and the Wei army died thousands of people at once.

Wei Jun was so frightened that he scurried around and collapsed. The Jin army took advantage of the victory to pursue and won the victory. Liu Yu repelled the Wei army, opened a road along the Yellow River to the west, and successfully advanced westward. At this time, another group of men and horses had already captured Luoyang, and met Liu Yushui's army at Tongguan. Then, Liu Yu attacked Chang'an and destroyed Later Qin. A few years later, Emperor An of Jin died, and Liu Yu thought the time was ripe, so he sent someone to persuade Emperor Gong of Jin, who had just succeeded to the throne, to abdicate. In 420, Liu Yu took the throne as emperor and changed the name of the country to Song. Since then, the Eastern Jin Dynasty has completely perished.

The emperor raises "pigs"

Liu Yucheng Emperor Ye

Liu Ziye, the deposed emperor of the Southern Song Dynasty, was dazed, and he was worried that his uncles were opposing him in the field, so he summoned them all to the capital and detained them in the palace. He named an uncle named Liu Or "Pig King", stripped Liu Or's clothes off, filled the rice with a wooden trough, and let the "Pig King" lick the food and "herd pigs" with a stick. Liu He was very scared in his heart, afraid that he might be killed by Liu Ziye one day. Thanks to another uncle of the deposed emperor, Liu Xiuren Duozhi, who played the round field for him, he was spared a death. After a few days, Liu Xiuren said to Emperor Song: "If the 'pig' is locked up in the prison of Ting Wei for a long time, he will definitely lose his stomach." As the saying goes, pigs should be raised, not for a long time. Emperor Song felt that this was reasonable, so he released Liu Or, and finally saved Liu Or's life.
