這習語出自英國小說家和劇作家巴裡( Sir James Matthrew Barrie,1860~1937)的兒童劇本《彼得・潘(Peter Pan)一書，書中描寫達林家的小孩溫迪、約翰和麥克爾養了一隻紐芬蘭狗，他們都非常喜歡這隻大狗,幾乎天天與它一起玩耍。可是他們的父親達林先生不但不喜歡這隻狗，還經常虐待它。這引起了孩子們的氣憤，為了表示抗議,孩子們一起離家出走。當父親得知此事後，深感後悔，為了表示悔改之意,他自己住進了狗的小屋，(in the doghouse),一直等到孩子們的歸來。這習語使用的時間不太長，原先指男人因行為不端而受妻子的懲罰或受到冷落，現用于泛指“失寵”。用來形容一個人因為某個錯誤或過失而受到某種處罰、責備或不受歡迎的情況。
