On The Bund, there is an old neoclassical style building, which has been rebuilt many times with the development of the builder's operation, and eventually became the second widest building on the side of the Huangpu River in the Bund complex. The building itself
Early 20th century photography of architecture
The building is located at 27 Zhongshan East 1st Road, Jardine Matheson & Co. Building, the original site of the early construction of a two-storey double-bay office building, in 1861 to build a 15-bay, three-storey brick and wood structure four-slope penthouse facing the Bund, the largest building volume in the Bund complex in Shanghai at that time. The renovated building is dignified and elegant, the layout is complete, the materials are exquisite, the decoration is exquisite, and the building facing the Huangpu River is more than 50 meters wide.
The building covers an area of 2100 square meters, with a total construction area of 14627 square meters. Reinforced concrete frame, local concrete wall load-bearing structure; the building plan is in the shape of a "concave" glyph with a westward opening, and the east and north main facades are adjacent to the city artery, which is one of the few cultural relics protection buildings in the Bund complex with two long-facing main facades, and is also one of the important representative buildings in the Bund building complex.
The main façade of the building is a classical style of central symmetrical, vertical three-section design, the first to second floors are made of roughly chiseled granite woolen stone to form a base, separated by two-storey semi-circular arch windows, the sense of sequence is strong, the three to five floors of the central five-bay room are slightly retreated into the high Corinthian colonnade, and the column head replaces the vine-like vortex pattern with geometric echoes. The corners of the building are decorated with square pilasters with embossed ornaments at the head of the columns. Above the entrance to the northeast corner of the building, there is also a pair of three-storey combined columns. The roof was originally a terrace with Aquarius stone balustrades and a flag platform in the center.
The shape of the building is dignified and elegant, and it is a neoclassical architectural style partially influenced by the Baroque style. The façade of the building is rich, with important historical and cultural value and rich architectural value.

In 1955, the building was used as the office building of the Municipal Foreign Trade Bureau for a long time, so it was called "Foreign Trade Building". After the second addition of the building in 1980, the total number of floors was 8 floors.
The building is a national key cultural relics protection unit and the first batch of outstanding historical buildings in Shanghai.
Building repairs
After the overall protection and renovation of the building from 2007 to 2014 and the interior decoration, it has become a building integrating office and commercial functions.
Restoration of the overall historical landscape
During the construction process, the surrounding area was demolished, the original evacuation channel was dredged, the functions of each entrance and exit were adjusted according to the needs, the overall image of the building was restored, and the fire safety and accessibility of the building were improved.
After the on-site physical analysis and verification and verification of the 1920 edition of historical drawings, the repair design demolished the wooden door added to the place, and completely restored the original atmospheric and elegant architectural space of the main entrance foyer.

Protect architectural feature details
In accordance with the requirements of key protection and functional use, the renovation design retains the vip hall in the center of the original three floors of the building as a whole, as well as some of the architectural features such as mosaic floors, wooden decorative door covers and wooden parapet partitions on the three floors, which are exquisitely decorated and of high value.

The original metal balustrades on the first to sixth floors of the main staircase are exquisitely patterned and well preserved, while the balustrades in the extra floor are quite different from the original railings. By using raw materials and simplifying the original pattern, the renovation replaces the railing of the layered part, which not only unifies the exquisite form and style of the main staircase railing, but also makes there a recognizable slight difference between the two.
Minimal intervention to add new elevators, improve the overall quality of the inner courtyard
In order to meet the needs of the new functions of the building, the design installed two vertical elevators with all-steel structure and glass shaft in the northeast and southeast corners of the outer wall of the building yard, which improved the vertical traffic capacity of the historical building, improved the environmental image of the inner courtyard and the quality of the building.
A new reversible safety glass guardrail has been added to the roof
Due to the functional needs of some roof sightseeing, this design adds a transparent safety glass guardrail to the inner side of the roof daughter wall, and adopts a reversible structural design, which improves the open and shared quality and safe use performance of the building under the premise of not damaging the roof, the daughter wall structure and the completed roof waterproof insulation layer.

On the granite rough stone wall on both sides of the main entrance of the building, the only pair of huge wall lamps with a height of about 2 meters in the entire Bund complex is solemn and grand, which is an important part of the building's historical style. At present, the lamps and lanterns have been restored after repair, and the lamp holder is a historical original.
The inner courtyard space of the building
The inner courtyard of the building is an open outdoor café area. The new elevator steel and glass materials contrast sharply with the original exterior wall finish of the building, forming a coexistence and dialogue of architectural languages of different eras.
