At the intersection of Jiangxi Middle Road and Fuzhou Road, at the four corners, there are four old buildings built in the 1920s and 1930s, forming a street space with distinctive characteristics in Shanghai's urban historic district. Among them, two sister buildings with symmetrical layouts and basically the same façade are even more spectacular. Today, let's first learn about one of them, the Miyakoya Hotel

The building itself

The building is located in the northeast of the intersection of the bustling Jiangxi Middle Road and Fuzhou Road, designed in 1929 and completed in 1934, covering an area of 1331 square meters, with a construction area of 10540.2 square meters, a steel frame structure system, 1 underground floor, 14 floors above ground, and a building height of 49.98 meters. The tower's eight-storey staircase forms a sense of elevation; the ground floor is decorated with granite stone along the outer wall of the street, and the main entrance and the top floor of the building, the eaves of the tower, etc. have typical Art Deco patterns, which is an early modern architectural style high-rise hotel building with Art Deco elements.

Since its completion in 1934, the building has belonged to the list of high-end hotels in Shanghai at that time, and was once a leading place for "urban fashion".

Located at No. 180 Jiangxi Middle Road and adjacent No. 170, the two buildings are separated on both sides of Fuzhou Road, which are sister buildings built in the same period, with symmetrical layout and basically the same façade. They form a concave curved façade and set up a corner main entrance with the construction building at the four corners of the same street entrance, and form a street center space with distinctive characteristics through the common encirclement of the road space and the building interface, which is of great research value in the history of Shanghai streets.

The building was an excellent example of the use of advanced structural systems, construction techniques and building materials at that time. In Shanghai area earlier the use of deep pile construction, through the effective control of the construction process, did not affect other buildings in close proximity, and only took 1 year to complete the construction of the building; the use of advanced all-steel structural system, the wall using the domestic leading "vapor mud brick", not only has the advantage of light weight, its tiny pore structure and improve the wall thermal insulation performance.

Since its opening in 1935, the building has been used for commercial purposes most of the time and has undergone several renovations in 1988, 2000 and 2013-2016.

Building repairs

After more than 80 years of use, the building has problems such as chaotic outdoor environment, lack of details of external wall buildings, obsolete and backward mechanical and electrical and fire protection systems, and its building functions, decoration standards, facilities and equipment can no longer meet the needs of modern commercial use. Since 2013, the building has undergone a complete renovation. In the process of renovation, the key protection areas are the overall environment of the building, the west and south facades and the basic layout, as well as the ground floor foyer, the hall and the first-floor large dining room, the original stairwell, the fireplace, the wrought iron railing and other characteristic details.

The exterior walls focus on decorative details

The distinctive Art Deco style façade and interior decoration details are an important part of the building's most historic architectural charm, but after many renovations, a large number of deletions or changes have been formed before the renovation. By analyzing the historical data and comparing the existing real samples of the sister building, the construction personnel repaired and restored the original architectural details of the main parts of the façade, so that the building truly and completely presented a rich and beautiful historical image.

After protection and repair, the building retains the original important space and characteristic decoration, highlights the historical and cultural value of the building, and also improves the overall safety and comfort performance.
