*7 The Coat

"My Lady," the mirror said.

"Snow White is the most beautiful woman in the kingdom."

The queen gritted（ /ˈɡrɪtɪd/ v. 咬紧（牙齿）（grit 的过去式）） her teeth（/tiːθ/ n. 牙齿 tooth的复数）.

"Oh no! She's still（/stɪl/ adv. 仍然）alive（/əˈlaɪv/ adj. 活着的）!"

（第二天早晨） the dwarfs （leave for出发去） the mines.

Dar waved（/weɪvd/ v. 挥手（wave的过去式）） good-bye to Snow White.

"Don't let anyone in!"

"Lovely, beautiful clothes!"

Snow White went to the window.

"Hello, miss!" the woman said.

"Would you like to buy something?"

"No, thank you," she said.

The woman pulled a fancy（/ˈfænsi/ adj. 精致的，花俏的） coat out of a chest.

She stepped（/stept/ v. 踏；行走（step的过去式）） toward（ təˈwɔːd/ prep. 向） the house.

"This coat matches（ /'mætʃɪz/ v. 和…相配（match的三单）） your hair," she said.

Snow White gazed（/ɡeɪzd/ vi. 凝视；注视（gaze的过去式）） at the beautiful coat.

"Just （试穿它）," she said.

"There's no harm（ /hɑːm/ n. 伤害） in that."

The woman smiled.

She （举起外套） for Snow White.

Suddenly the coat grew tight（ /taɪt/ adj. 紧的）.

It squeezed（/skwiːzd/ v. 挤压 squeeze的过去式） her entire（ /ɪnˈtaɪə/ adj. 全部的，整个的） body（ /ˈbɒdi/ n. 身体）.

"Ahh!" Snow White cried. "I can't breathe（/briːð/ vi. 呼吸）!"

The woman laughed.

"Good-bye, Snow White!"

Then—poof（ /pʊf/ (表示某事突然发生)噗的一声）! The woman vanished（ /ˈvænɪʃt/ v. 突然消失; 神秘失踪 vanish的过去式）.
