道可道，非常道。名可名，非常名。无名天地之始；有名万物之母。故常无，欲以观其妙；常有，欲以观其徼。此两者，同出而异名，同谓之玄。玄之又玄，众妙之门。
The Tao can be said, but it is not what is usually called the Tao. A name can be given, but it is not the usual name. He is none, because he was before the beginning of heaven and earth; or he is having, because he is the origin of all things. So, from the point of view of nothingness, we can figure out his secret. From every angle, you can see his tracks. Reality and nothingness are just different words, they actually come from the same source. This identity is called mystery. Secret and mystery! The source of all the mysteries of the universe.
道可以说，但不是通常所说的道。名可以起，但不是通常所起名。可以说他是无，因为他在天地创始之前; 也可以说他是有，因为他是万物的母亲。所以，从虚无的角度，可以揣摩他的奥妙。从实有的角度，可以看到他的踪迹。实有与虚无只是说法不同，两者实际上同出一源。这种同一，就叫做玄秘。玄秘而又玄秘啊! 宇宙间万般奥妙的源头。
