The reporter learned from the Ministry of Natural Resources that the international standard in the field of seawater desalination " Marine Technology - Reverse Osmosis Desalination Products - Municipal Water Supply Guidelines" formulated by the Tianjin Institute of Seawater Desalination and Comprehensive Utilization of the Ministry of Natural Resources was released on the official website of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on September 29, 2021, which is the first international standard for seawater desalination led by China.

The promulgation and implementation of this standard can standardize and simplify the water quality testing of seawater desalination products, ensure the safety of pipe networks and terminal water, and is a necessary supplement to the World Health Organization (WHO) Drinking Water Quality Standards, especially for the safe use of desalinated water in developing countries.

It is understood that in 2015, in the case of iso standards in the field of seawater desalination, China proposed to set up a seawater desalination working group (iso/tc8/sc13/wg3) in the Marine Technology Subcommittee, which was recognized by member states. In June 2018, ISO officially passed the standard project, including China, the United States, Germany, Japan and other 8 countries to participate in the formulation. Because the technical content of the standard involves municipal water supply, and the national conditions and the stage of dilution industry development are different, it is difficult to formulate. After active communication with expert representatives of member states, a consensus on the concept of "providing convenient, economical and safe desalinated water for sustainable development" was finally reached, which promoted the final release of the standard.
