In Colombo, Sri Lanka, 160 kilometres from Colombo, there is an elephant rehabilitation home run by the Sri Lankan Wildlife Department, where staff beckon orphaned baby elephants to drink milk.
The centre is the first dedicated elephant rehabilitation centre in Asia, established in 1995 to cater for orphaned wild baby elephants. So far, 118 recovered orphan elephants have been released into the wild, of which 16 have bred in the wild and given birth to cubs.
Sri Lanka's wild elephant population has declined dramatically in recent years, with many killed by poachers by cultivators for crop destruction and many dying from collisions with passenger trains at night. Back to Sohu, see more
