At the end of the 1930s, the rediscovery of the Yuanming miscellaneous drama "Also the Garden Old Collection" attracted great attention from the academic community and the whole society. In order to preserve ancient books through circulation, during the most difficult period of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Zhang Yuanji personally presided over the commercial press's loan printing of 144 kinds of Yuanming miscellaneous dramas in the "Old Collection of the Garden".
The Original Seven Volumes of the "Correspondence Between the Revised Yuanming Miscellaneous Dramas" collected by the Shanghai Library were originally divided into seven volumes, that is, the special collection of letters between Zhang Yuanji or the Commercial Press at that time and Zheng Zhenduo, Wang Yunwu, Yuan Tongli, Li Xuangong, Wang Jilie, Ding Yinggui, Jiang Dianyang, Hu Wenkai, Jiang Zhongmu, Qu Fengqi, Ren Shengzu, Sun Kaidi, Sun Boheng, Wang Shoudi and other relevant institutions to sort out and publish the "Orphan Yuanming Miscellaneous Dramas". From June 22, 1938 to December 10, 1941, it records the entire process of sorting, editing, printing, publishing and distributing opera works, and completely and vividly reflects the style of collation and publication of ancient books in the Commercial Press.
This time, the Commercial Press compiled and merged the "Correspondence of Revised Yuanming Miscellaneous Dramas" into six volumes of photocopying and publishing, using full-text scanning and printing first, and then using printouts for identification and collation.
"There are about 470 letters in the "Correspondence between the Yuanming Miscellaneous Dramas". According to statistics, only more than 20 pieces of the "Correspondence between The Revised Yuanming Miscellaneous Dramas" have been published, in other words, 95% have not been published, including dozens of cases that have not been recorded in the "Complete Works of Zhang Yuanji" and "The Complete Works of Zheng Zhenduo".
These letters not only have important reference value for the editing and collation of ancient opera books, but also are direct and vivid records of the beginning of modern Chinese publishing, but also reflect the social life and current situation in China in the 1930s and 1940s, and are valuable historical materials for the study of China's publishing history, literary history and social history.

HanfenLou is the library of the Commercial Press, and the original collection of ancient books and rare books is about 3,000 or 4,000, including many Song and Yuan dynasty old books and orphan books in Hainei. In 1932, during the "1.28 Incident", the Oriental Library of the Shanghai Commercial Press, together with the Hanfen Building, which contained a large number of ancient books and rare books, was destroyed in the fires of the Japanese-Kou invasion, and nearly 500,000 books were instantly reduced to ashes.
Fortunately, Zhang Yuanji had stored the 5,000 copies of the Song and Yuan rare books treasured by Han Fenlou in advance in the vault of jincheng Bank in the Shanghai public concession, which saved these rare books. The Records of the Embers of Han fen lou is an ancient bibliography compiled by Zhang Yuanji for this batch of rare books after the gunfire, with the title "Embers, So Zhi Pain Also", which was typeset and published by the Shanghai Commercial Press in 1951.
This is also Zhang Yuanji's last work on the collation of ancient books. It is reported that the "Records of the Embers of Han Fen Lou" (manuscript) now in the Shanghai Library is a typed mimeograph of Zhang Yuanji's modified and annotated handwriting, and finally distributed and printed accordingly. Among the 547 rare books he has written, 90 are Song engravings (including Yuan Xiu and Yuan Ming manuscripts), 22 Shadow Song Manuscripts, 1 Gold Engraving, 2 Mongolian Engravings, 87 Yuan Engravings (including Ming Xiuben), 72 Famous ScholarLy Editions, 17 Manuscripts, and the rest are rare Ming Ben, Ming Movable Characters, and Ming and Qing Old Manuscripts that were handed over by famous artists.
The manuscript is divided into classics, histories, sub-books, and collections according to the classification of the four libraries, and the ten volumes are uniformly revised by Zhang Yuanji. The first volume also contains the handwritten seal text of Gu Tinglong for the typeset edition of "Hanfen Lou Ember Yu Shulu" and "Shanghai Commercial Press Collection Edition". Compared with the printed version, the manuscript retains the original appearance of the book-forming process, and many of the version information deleted in the printed version due to the length of the manuscript are restored in the manuscript, and the reader can also see the judgment made by Zhang Yuanji and his style of governance.
The manuscript was compiled by Chen Xianxian, a researcher at the Shanghai Library. Chen Xianxing believes that the "Ember Yu Shu" reflects Zhang Yuanji's view of "rare books"; as an extremely outstanding bibliography, the Hanfen Lou Ember Yu Shulu has a non-negligible position in the history of editions.
