Explore the rearing methods of the yellow-edged box turtle in practice

I mainly raise yellow margins, almost 8 years, because the number is small (10), so I have always insisted on feeding natural food, such as bananas, tomatoes, lobsters, pork hearts, etc. After years of observation, although the yellow edge belongs to omnivorous animals, but in fact it is still relatively meaty, in the spring to feed bananas, once fed 8, basically can eat, once fed twice meat, and then feed 8 bananas, there will be a lot left. Eating meat is also more violent than eating vegetarian.

Therefore, some articles on the Internet about yellow edge vegetarian feeding lack practice and experimentation, but the author's wishful thinking. In fact, it is not difficult to imagine that the yellow edge is not a vegetarian in the wild, and there are a large number of insects under the fallen leaves in the mountain woodland, which are the main food sources of the yellow edge, so I think the pure vegetarian feeding statement is biased.

There is also the frequency of feeding, my insistence is that as long as the turtles eat, then feed it. Don't worry about the turtle will die, after feeding the turtle for so many years, I haven't seen the dead. Generally just out of sleep and fast hibernation when the temperature is low can not be fed, when the temperature is higher once or twice a week, the temperature above 28 degrees is basically fed every day, the amount of feeding can be increased or decreased according to the amount of food eaten by the turtle.

Let's talk about the incubation of the yellow edge, the experience of hatching turtle seedlings is only 5 years, not long, the first use of vermiculite as an incubation medium, because of lack of experience, the first year did not hatch out of one, and then use yellow sand as an incubation medium, this effect is not bad, basically 100% hatching rate. Because the dry and wet conditions of yellow sand are easier to observe, yellow sand chooses medium sand and has strong air permeability. My family's yellow edge spawning pond is 2 square meters, the place is large, the eggs are sometimes not found, afraid of omission, so every day will be watered to the spawning pond to keep moist, missed turtle eggs will have natural hatching of small turtles every year.

I let my turtles hibernate naturally every year, including the seedlings born that year. My place is in Xinyang, Henan, which is the northernmost place where the Yellow Rim can be wild (please refer to the map), and the minimum temperature in winter in recent years has not fallen below minus 5 degrees. The yellow edge is a very skinny turtle, and the hibernation medium I use is also yellow sand, which is covered with a layer of straw for heat preservation and moisturizing.

The winter of 15 years is the coldest winter in Xinyang in recent years, the sun stone I raised is placed in the water to hibernate, even the turtle belt water is frozen into ice cubes, all dead, and the sand hibernating of the yellow edge seedlings is frozen into a block, the hard state, there is no death, it can be seen that the yellow edge is still relatively frozen. Speaking of the experience of hibernation of the yellow edge seedlings that year, my seedlings came out late to the end of September, and the temperature in Xinyang at the end of October was relatively low, so the seedlings only had this month's eating time, did not eat much, could not feed several times, and also hibernated.

Comments from Turtle:

This article is also a homework of our internal group, sharing the author's own experience in yellow edge breeding accumulated over the years, which does have certain reference value, and is a very good summary of experience, but the subjective color is slightly stronger. Most turtles are easy to raise and difficult to raise, each breed and even each individual will have a lot of differences, and the relationship between each factor in the breeding process is quite complicated, sometimes through the usual small amount of feeding experience summary may not be accurate, so more should be more observation, more learning, more communication, if there is a chance, you can contact some professional theoretical knowledge, because the practice of standing on the shoulders of giants will make you go further.
