Can people aged 3-11 get both the COVID-19 vaccine and the flu vaccine at the same time? Answered by Hainan disease control experts

author:Bright Net

Recently, the peak of 3-11-year-old people vaccinating against the new crown vaccine, on November 8, Hainan Daily reporter learned from the Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention that as of November 7, the province's 3-11-year-old population had received a total of 1.0315 million doses, with a cumulative vaccination rate of 81.28%. Since it is the high incidence season of influenza, Fu Zhenwang, director of the Immunization Planning Office of the Institute of Infectious Disease Prevention and Control of the Hainan Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, especially reminds the baby's parents that the influenza vaccine and the new crown vaccine cannot be vaccinated at the same time, and the two vaccinations need to be at least 14 days apart.

It is reported that as of November 7, the province's 3-17-year-old population has received 1.8151 million doses of the first dose, the first dose of the 18-year-old population has been vaccinated with a cumulative total of 7.5251 million doses, and the third dose of the new crown vaccine for key populations has been vaccinated with a total of 887,600 doses.

Fu Zhenwang reminded that children are also susceptible to the new crown virus. After children are infected with the new crown virus, although they are mild, some of them may still develop severe diseases and even death. Moreover, asymptomatic/mildly ill patients play an important role in the spread of the new crown virus. Schools are densely populated places, and once an epidemic occurs, it is easy to cause local spread. Children's vaccination against the new crown virus can effectively reduce the risk of illness, severe illness and death on the one hand, and on the other hand, it can establish an immune barrier in the child population to block the spread of the new crown virus. People aged 3-11 can be vaccinated free of charge as long as there are no contraindications.

However, children are not suitable for COVID-19 vaccination if they have the following conditions:

●Those who are allergic to the active ingredient of the vaccine, any of the inactive ingredients, substances used in the production process, or those who have been allergic to the same vaccine before;

●Those who have had severe allergic reactions to vaccines in the past (such as acute allergic reactions, angioedema, dyspnea, etc.);

●People with uncontrolled epilepsy and other serious neurological disorders (e.g., transverse myelitis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, demyelinating disease, etc.);

●People who have a fever, or who have an acute illness, or who are in the acute onset of a chronic disease, or who have a severe, uncontrolled chronic disease.

Most children will not react to the COVID-19 vaccine. After a small number of children are vaccinated, there may be red, swollen and induration at the vaccination site, or fever, headache, fatigue, etc., which are generally mild and will resolve spontaneously without special treatment. If persistent discomfort occurs after vaccination, you should seek medical attention in time and report to the vaccination unit. Therefore, after vaccination, remember to stay in the outpatient clinic for 30 minutes, and then leave after no discomfort.

In addition, in the autumn and winter, influenza superimposed on the new crown pneumonia will bring more harm, Fu Zhenwang said that if infected with influenza virus, because the initial symptoms are similar to the new crown pneumonia, it brings difficulties to diagnosis and differential diagnosis; after the flu, the resistance decreases, increasing the risk of infection with the new crown virus, if infected with influenza virus and new crown virus at the same time, two serious respiratory infectious diseases are superimposed, which will bring a double burden to the health of the whole body.

In addition, the COVID-19 vaccine and the influenza vaccine cannot be substituted for each other, the influenza vaccine and the new crown vaccine cannot be given at the same time, and the two vaccinations need to be at least 14 days apart. Influenza vaccine is given between the two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, i.e. 14 days after the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and the second dose of COVID-19 vaccine after 14 days. It should be noted that choosing to get the flu vaccine between two doses of the new crown virus vaccine is subject to the requirements of the number and interval of the new crown virus vaccination.
