At 7:30 a.m. on Monday, 85-year-old expert Jiang Zexi rushed to the outpatient building of Wuhan Children's Hospital on time, put on a white coat, sat patiently in the consultation room and waited patiently for the opening time to provide diagnosis and treatment services for small children.

Elder Jiang is one of the "elder-level" experts who grew up with Wuhan Children's Hospital. In 1956, at the age of 22, she graduated from Tongji Medical University and went to work at Wuhan Children's Hospital. At this time, the hospital was only established for more than a year, at the beginning of the establishment of the hospital, there were only 113 employees and 40 pediatric beds, mainly diagnosing and treating common diseases and multiple diseases in pediatric internal medicine, at that time, she often lived in the hospital and stayed at the bedside. Seeing the gap in the field of pediatric surgery diagnosis and treatment, Jiang Zexi resolutely turned to pediatric surgery. After returning from her studies at Beijing Children's Hospital, she led the team to create the first pediatric surgery department in the central region, laying the foundation for the development of plastic surgery, neonatal surgery, orthopedics and other majors, as well as the establishment of pediatric cardiovascular specialties.

Under the construction of Ma Zhongliang, Wan Jiguang, Li Xiangyan, Dong Zongqi and other generations of pediatric doctors callosomen, Wuhan Children's Hospital has grown strongly, the number of beds is increasing, and the scope of diagnosis and treatment is also expanding.

In June 1978, a new four-storey outpatient building on Stadium Road was inaugurated with a construction area of 2,495 square meters, initially becoming a comprehensive pediatric outpatient department with complete diagnosis and treatment services in various pediatric departments.

In 1979, the Wuhan Children's Health Institute was established, and in 1992, it was merged with the Wuhan Women's Health Care Institute to form the Wuhan Maternal and Child Health Hospital, which undertook the service, management and guidance of the city's child health care and maternal eugenics.

Taking the hospital as a home and focusing on work is a portrayal of pediatric medical entrepreneurs. Peng Wenjuan of the Department of Integrative Medicine, three generations of her family are pediatricians. His grandfather Peng Ziyu went to work in the traditional Chinese medicine department of the hospital in 1954, and his father Peng Zhaolin inherited his father's business, and both grandfathers served as the director of the traditional Chinese medicine department. Peng Wenjuan recalled that when she was a child, she often saw her father rushing to the hospital in the middle of the night in a cloak to rescue the child. After I joined the work, when I met the children getting together, I also ate and slept with my father in the hospital, and treated the children at any time.

The arduous struggle of generations of pediatric doctors has been exchanged for the obvious improvement of the hospital's medical technology level and the significant improvement of service capabilities, and the hospital has embarked on the "fast lane" of rapid development of modernization.

In 1996, Wuhan Children's Hospital passed the evaluation of Grade III Children's Hospital and became one of the first batch of Tertiary Grade A children's specialized hospitals in China.

In 2003, Wuhan Children's Hospital ushered in a new node in historical development, and the Wuhan Maternal and Child Health Hospital, which originated from Zozong, was strongly integrated into the "Wuhan Women and Children's Health Care Center", becoming a comprehensive medical institution integrating women's and children's medical and health care functions, and also the largest women's and children's specialized hospital in central China, winning the title of "National Top 100 Hospitals" and standing in the central region.

In 2016, the hospital was officially renamed as "Wuhan Children's Hospital (Wuhan Maternal and Child Health Hospital, Wuhan Women and Children's Health Care Center)".

In 2017, Wuhan Children's Hospital successfully passed the top three review, and promoted medical quality and management to a new level through the review. New neurosurgery, cardiovascular interventional surgery, breast surgery, etc., and improve the hospital specialty system.

In 2018, the hospital added the "Hubei Provincial Children's Medical Center", leading the development of pediatric health care in Hubei and ushering in another milestone in the history of hospital development. The hospital has successively listed "Wuhan Children's Hospital Affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology", "The Sixth Clinical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology" and "Pediatric Clinical College of Jianghan University", and is a joint unit of the Department of Pediatrics of Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

In 2019, Wuhan Maternal and Child Health Hospital successfully passed the top three review, the hospital's Zhuankou Branch and Women's Insurance Building project began construction, and a number of scientific research platforms were integrated to implement the clinical + scientific research development model.

In order to let the children in and around the province also enjoy high-quality pediatric medical resources and give full play to the public welfare of the hospital, the hospital took the initiative to lead the establishment of the "Hubei Pediatric Medical Alliance" and "Wuhan Maternal and Child Health Community" to carry out hierarchical diagnosis and treatment referral and transfer, train grass-roots pediatricians, carry out pediatric medical quality control, and health at the grass-roots level, and strive to enhance the strength of Pediatric Medical Care in Hubei; in 2019, it united with 12 district-level maternal and child health care institutions in Wuhan to form the Wuhan Maternal and Child Health Community. Explore a two-level alliance community with the district maternal and child health hospital as the backbone to achieve close cooperation at multiple levels such as equipment, technology, talents and management, and promote the "double sinking" of high-quality medical care resources and high-quality medical care services.

From small outpatient clinics in the wasteland to today's modern large hospitals, from only pediatric internal medicine to complete specialties, it can solve the whole life cycle of diseases of women and children. The years have left too many heavy memories for the hospital, and they have also polished more brilliance.
