|Gui Rebel Miscellaneous Talk /Thursday Update/Bamboo Rat (written) |

Bamboo Rat's Arabian history series is more complete, and may be more intermittent in the future, and then Thursday will be followed by the rebel miscellaneous talk

In 888, one day in the fourth year of Tang Guangqi, a hundred flowers bloomed.

This was a peaceful and peaceful day for the Tang Dynasty, the old empire: Emperor Tang had just played a big circle in Baoji and returned to Chang'an City, which had once been occupied by the rebel Zhu Mei, and continued to live a beautiful day without a day; Heyang Jiedu made a man named Li Han be expelled by Yin Zhang Quanyi of Henan because of his special plundering and using people as food, and then this Zhang Quanyi took Heyang by the way; one named Sun Ru attacked Yangzhou, causing another named Yang Xingmi to flee to Luzhou to survive A man named Zhu Quanzhong, in order to restore the son of Le Yanzhen to the former Wei Bojun who fled due to the change of the army, sent an army to attack Wei Bojun...

Everything is so cozy and comfortable.

Gui Rebel Miscellaneous: Kill Zhang Huaishen (Part 1) Preface 123

Emperor Tang loved cockfighting and was indifferent to the government, and the situation in The Tang Dynasty was deteriorating day by day

However, in the western region far from the Central Plains, in the city of Shazhou under the jurisdiction of the rebel army, the atmosphere was slightly tense: countless soldiers and horses patrolled the streets, swords and swords were lined up, and a small number of people wandering on the streets were forced to flee back to their homes under the sun, looking in fear at the streets that were gradually filled with soldiers and horses - since the first time that the emperor had pacified Guazhou in Shazhou, Shazhou City had seen so many swordsmen.

What the hell is going on?

If you cut the perspective to the jiedushi mansion, you will see eight bloody corpses lying on the ground: the most tragic person who died was frankly Zhang Huaishen, Zhang Zhijun, who had just been named the shazhou jiedushi envoy two years ago, but was actually the supreme leader of the rebel army. And the deceased next to him was his wife Chen Shi, and the six large and small corpses next to him were the six sons of the Zhang family, Zhang Huaishen, the leader of the Gui rebel army, and his family, all of whom were killed on the same day, setting off a terrifying wave in this small shazhou city.

So who killed Zhang Huaishen?

In order to find the murderer of Zhang Lingjun, we cannot leave out an important clue: "Zhang Huaishen's Epitaph".

Since the epitaph generally records most of the deceased's life experience, Zhang Huaishen's epitaph also has a description of his death time and other information. The cause of his death, although it is rarely mentioned, only eight words, is enough to become an important clue to our reasoning. These eight words are:

"The bull is evil, and the monarch is deceived."

First of all, we need to understand what these eight words mean. The vertical bull mentioned here is actually not a real cow, but a personal name: Mr. Vertical Bull was a person from the Spring and Autumn Period, and according to the Zuo Biography, he was also the illegitimate eldest son of Sun Bao, the uncle of The Duke of Luguo. Because he was an illegitimate child, Mr. Shuniu did not grow up with his father when he was young, but waited until he became an adult before running with his mother, and was deeply loved by his uncle Leopard.

Gui Rebel Miscellaneous: Kill Zhang Huaishen (Part 1) Preface 123

Uncle Sun Leopard, a nobleman of the State of Lu

But this bull, who was valued by his father, was not as "cute" as his father thought, on the contrary, he was a big ambitionist who could do anything to achieve his goals: when his father was ill, in order to compete for the authority that did not belong to his illegitimate son, he killed two half-brothers, and starved his father alive, making himself Lu Qing.

Obviously, when the author of the epitaph described the cause of Zhang Huaishen's death, although he could only briefly record it for some reasons, he used such an allusion to vividly portray the true cause of Zhang Zhijun's death. Below, let's summarize the meaning of "erecting cattle to commit iniquity":

First: The bull in the sin of the bull is a son of a, who killed his father and brother because of his lust for profit, and seized power that did not belong to him. Therefore, it is inferred from this that the person who killed Zhang Huaishen should be his eldest son, because the power has blackmailed his family.

Second: After the vertical bull won the hand, he did not serve as the secretary of state himself, but elected a puppet as Lu Qing. Then the person who killed Zhang Huaishen should not have directly entered the room and controlled the power on the surface.

In this way, it seems that the murderer is already obvious, as long as you find Zhang Huaishen's eldest son, and see if he later served as a high-ranking official in the rebel army, you can easily find the real murderer.

But could things be that simple?

After investigation, there is actually no evidence that Zhang Huaishen Zhang Zhijun recorded on the epitaph did not have any evidence that he had an illegitimate son; moreover, there were only two Zhang family members who held the relevant positions of The Guiyi Army Jiedushi after Zhang Huaishen, one was Zhang Huaiding and the other was Zhang Chengfeng. Huai Ding is the son of the late Jiedu envoy Zhang Yichao, who has just returned to Shazhou not long ago, and is an equal to Zhang Huaishen, which is inconsistent with the family relationship of his children. Zhang Chengfeng, on the other hand, was the son of Huai Ding, who ruled too far away from Huai Shen and was hardly suspicious.

Then according to the "evil of the bull", it seems that the murderer we are looking for does not exist at all.

Don't worry, after these four words, there are four other words for us to reason: "The monarch is deceived." ”

Gui Rebel Miscellaneous: Kill Zhang Huaishen (Part 1) Preface 123

Because the Gui rebel army and the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes are quite closely linked, many historical materials of the Gui rebel army come from within the Mogao Grottoes

The meaning of the so-called "monarch seeing deception" is better understood, that is, the meaning of the monarch being deceived: the monarch at that time naturally referred to the emperor of the Tang Dynasty, which means that the murderer most likely concealed something from the Tang court and deceived the Tang emperor to obtain benefits.

Speaking of which, there is a person who gradually appears in front of our eyes - this person is Suo Xun.

So why suspect this Soho? Why is it said that he deceived the Emperor of the Tang Dynasty?

First of all, let's talk about why we doubt this Suo Xun: because this Suo Xun's personality can correspond to the person we said earlier as the "vertical bull". Shu Niu is an ambitious person, and so is Suo Xun.

After Zhang Huaishen's death, in addition to Zhang Huaiding's brief two-year tenure as an emissary of jiedushi, the title of jiedushi envoy of the guiyi army once fell to Suo Xun's head. And the time when he was called the Emissary of Temperance is also interesting. It was at the end of 892 AD, which was also the time when the previous Jiedu had caused Zhang Huaiding to die. At the same time, because this Suo Xun was the orphan of Zhang Huaiding before his death, but within a year of his predecessor's death, he hastily became a jiedushi envoy, which can only show that his thirst for power cannot wait for a moment.

After claiming to be an envoy of jiedushi, Suo Xun once dared not raise his status and official position because of his improper position, and in the early days, he once called himself a doctor, or even an ordinary general. But two years later, when the situation stabilized him slightly, he promoted his rank to the position of a regular attendant on horseback, and then soared to the rank of a heavy minister such as Shangshu of the Punishment Department.

From the above examples, it can be seen that perhaps Suo Xun's desire for power to control one side will become one of his motives for murdering Zhang Huaishen. In addition, since he could become Zhang Huaiding's orphan, in the late Zhang Huaishen era, he would certainly not be an unknown junior in the Gui rebel army. Being so close to central power could also have facilitated his murder of Zhang Huaishen.

For the Gui rebel army ruled by the Zhang family, if a person with a different surname can control the overall situation of the Gui rebel army, once this precedent is opened, future generations will naturally follow suit, and the Zhang family naturally cannot let other people with different surnames serve as emissaries under the condition of ability. An ambitious subordinate may also attract hostility from the Zhang family, and may also become one of the reasons why Suo Xun murdered the boss of the Zhang family.

So how did Suo Xun cater to the four words "the monarch sees the deception"?

Zhang Huaiding, who served as an envoy to Jiedu before him, his final title is found in the "Records of Li's Re-cultivation of Meritorious Deeds", but the entire title does not mention the name of "Envoy to the Festival of the Rebel Army", but only "Shagua Isi and other states jiedushi envoys inspector x department Shangshu and imperial master Zhang Huaiding". Before him, Zhang Huaishen did not eventually receive the knot staff of the rebel army jiedushi envoy, but only served as the shazhou jiedushi envoy, and claimed to be the hexi jiedushi envoy. In contrast to these two people, Suo Xun's title added the name of the rebel festival to his body: the first nomination of the donor on the north side of the Mogao Caves 196 Cave was marked with the words "The return to the rebel army festival envoy.....Suo Xun single-mindedly provides".

After Zhang Yichao died carrying the title of Emissary of the Guiyi Army, none of his legitimate successors, the heirs of the Zhang family, ever received the title of Emissaries of the Guiyi Army. However, a person with a different surname, Suo Xun, wrote for himself such an offering as "Returning to the Rebel Army's Festival To Make Suo Xun", which is enough to show that either somehow deceived Tang Zhaozong and obtained the title of The Returned Rebel Army's Festival Envoy; or deceived the people within the Rebel Army, claiming to be the Return to the Rebel Army's Festival.

There is also a sentence on another stele, "Monument to the Return of the Rebel Army to the Rebel Army in the Western Province of the Great Tang Dynasty", which completely confirms that Suo Xun was officially appointed by Tang Zhaozong to become the envoy of the Rebel Army. Here it is written: "Gongte Feng Silk Lun, add xxx", of which "Silk Lun" means a general term such as the emperor's edict and the provinces issued by the three provinces and the Holy Will, that is, the edict from the imperial court.

In this way, Suo Xun and "monarch see deception" seem to fit seamlessly.

There is ambition, there is the conditions for committing the crime, there is the action corresponding to the clue. Now can we say that Suo Xun is the murderer of Zhang Huaishen?

The answer is: no.

To overturn Suo Xun's claim that Zhang Huaishen murdered, it is fundamentally necessary to overturn the important evidence that doubts Suo Xun's four words: "The monarch sees deception."

At that time, all the major feudal towns had a post-family organization in Chang'an, called the "Jinsongyuan". The academy under the command of the rebels was called the Shazhou Institute of Music, which, in addition to its daily work, assumed more "please" functions than any other academy. And the people who asked for an offer to the imperial court through the JinquanYuan were mostly Zhang Huaishen, who was killed: according to the shangshu records of the Shazhou Jinquan Yuan, the Shazhou JinquanYuan had asked Zhang Huaishen for the post of envoy three times, namely the first year of Guangqi (885), the second year of Guangqi (886), and the third year of Guangqi (887). These three points in time have nothing to do with Suo Xun. So after Suo Xun came to power, did the Shazhou Jinyuan have any records about him asking for an offer to the imperial court?

Gui Rebel Miscellaneous: Kill Zhang Huaishen (Part 1) Preface 123

Incision. Tang Dynasty

Answer: No.

Of course, there is no possibility that this has not been recorded, but judging from the existing conditions, Suo Xun's addition to the rebel army festival may not be the result of his own tricks and deception of the Tang Court, but it is more likely that the Tang Court took the initiative to grant him the title of the return to the rebel army festival envoy.

Suo Xun in the "Monument to Suo Xun Jide" is a warrior who can fight a good war: he once went around to collect Uighurs during Zhang Huaishen's reign, so he was appreciated and recommended by Zhang Huaishen to the imperial court as a history of Guazhou. In 888, Zhang Huaishen was made the envoy of Jiedu, but the jurisdiction was reduced to a place in Shazhou, then at this time, Suoxun of Guazhou had a certain degree of independence, and his strength was bound to be strengthened. After Zhang Huaishen's death, as Zhang Huaiding's brother-in-law, Suo Xun of the powerful faction must have held a high position of power in Zhang Huaiding's regime, and his strength continued to soar.

Gui Rebel Miscellaneous: Kill Zhang Huaishen (Part 1) Preface 123

Guazhou location indication

When Zhang Huaiding died, Suo Xun seized the position of Jiedushi with his strength and sat on the whole territory of Guazhou in Shazhou, and his strength rose sharply. For the imperial court, Suo Xun at this time has become a threat - he is not the heir of the Zhang family, who knows how to treat the imperial court? Although the Zhang family very much wanted the name of Jiedushi, after all, Xianjun Yichao was a loyal person to the imperial court, and died in Chang'an. As a descendant, you can never rebel and turn your face, at most you can call yourself a moderation.

But this Suo Xun is a person with a different surname...

At this point, our speculation that Suo Xun was awarded the reward of the rebel army's Jiedushi envoy can become like this: it is because the Tang court is afraid of Suo Xun's growing strength, so it takes the initiative to give the name of jiedushi envoy, and it is not Suo Xun himself who deceives the imperial court. Then the "monarch sees deception" and naturally breaks away from Suo Xun, and Suo Xun, who has broken away from this relationship, naturally has nothing to do with the murderer.

So who in the end brutally killed the Zhang Huaishen family, the first leader of the rebel army who was already the envoy of Shazhou Jiedushi at that time?
