On March 21, Guatemala's Pacaya volcano continued to be intensely active and spewed out large amounts of ash. Black volcanic ash rushed into the sky, surrounded by red lightning, presenting a spectacular and shocking scene in the sky.
How did this spectacle of "earth fire stirring up heavenly thunder" come about? Francisco Juárez, deputy director of The National Institute of Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Meteorology and Hydrology in Guatemala, said the ash is actually gravel, with very fine particles containing volcanic glass and minerals. These high-temperature substances rub against the cold atmosphere, and these events occur and turn into thunderstorms.
Mount Pacaya is located about 50 kilometers south of the capital, Guatemala City, at an altitude of about 2,500 meters. The volcano has been very active recently, constantly flowing out lava and spewing ash.
At present, the volcano is under all-weather monitoring, and the geological department does not rule out the possibility of intensification of volcanic activity.
