According to the writer Wang Meng's recollection, the most impressive thing about the Fourth Literary Congress was a passage in the congratulatory speech delivered by Comrade Deng Xiaoping on behalf of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on October 30: "The spiritual labor of literature and art greatly requires writers and artists to give play to their personal creative spirit. What to write and how to write can only be explored and gradually solved by writers and artists in artistic practice. In this regard, do not interfere! ”
I remember that when Comrade Xiaoping said " Do not interfere " , he strengthened his tone , and the whole audience erupted into thunderous applause.
