How many years can a person work? Thirty years, forty years? At the age of 90, he used nearly 70 years of work experience to interpret "life is endless, dedication is not stopped". On the afternoon of May 1, Lin Yuan, the founding president of the Municipal Foundation for the Elderly, passed away. His children said he gave himself a Labor Day and could finally rest.

Lin Yuan was the chairman of the Xiamen Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and is the winner of the National Meritorious Award for Attaching Importance to Aging Work and the Xiamen Outstanding Contribution Award for Aging. At the age of 63, he founded the Xiamen Foundation for the Elderly, and it was not until last year that he was re-elected as the president of the Foundation for the Elderly for four consecutive terms.

Establishment of a foundation for the elderly

After 25 years as the president, he did not get paid a penny, and also donated more than 100,000 yuan

Lin Yuan, who came to Xiamen as a worker in 1948, served as vice mayor of Xiamen, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Xiamen Municipal Committee, director of the Organization Department, and chairman of the Xiamen Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. In 1991, the 62-year-old Lin Yuan became the director of the Municipal Committee on Aging. He said that he is also an old man, and he must seize the time to do more practical and good things for the old man, especially for the elderly who have difficulties.

In August 1992, at the suggestion of Lin Yuan, the Xiamen Municipal Foundation for the Elderly was established first in the province, and the municipal finance allocated 500,000 yuan as the starting capital. In 1993, after retirement, Lin Yuan devoted himself to the work of the Municipal Foundation for the Elderly. He took the fundraising proposal and visited the company with the staff to raise funds. Seeing that he was still running around at such an old age, many business leaders were touched and generously donated.

Once, Lin Yuan visited Singapore with a delegation and met with a local Xiamen entrepreneur. Knowing that the other party had the intention to repay the society, Lin Yuan immediately introduced the situation of the foundation to him, and the entrepreneur immediately donated 100,000 yuan, and later donated 100,000 yuan to Xiamen.

After 25 years as the president of the foundation, Lin Yuan did not get a penny in return, but donated more than 100,000 yuan. Under his leadership, the Municipal Foundation for the Elderly has continued to grow and develop. Zhang Peijun, vice president of the Municipal Foundation for the Elderly, said that President Lin Yuan always kept in mind the elderly and the families of the elderly who had difficulties in life and encountered misfortunes, and often led the staff of the foundation to go deep into the grass-roots level to investigate, go to the homes of these elderly people to visit and comfort them, and instructed the accompanying street and village cadres to do more practical things of "sending charcoal in the snow".

Love Caring Nursing Home

Travel around to raise funds for construction and create a new model of nursing homes for the elderly

The staff of the Municipal Foundation for the Elderly said that after President Lin Yuan fell ill, he was still relieved about the renovation and expansion project of the Xiamen Love Nursing Home, and every time he went to visit him, he always had to inquire about the progress of the project. "The caring nursing home started from scratch, and he poured too much effort into it." The staff said.

During the "two sessions" in 2005, 46 CPPCC members submitted proposals to establish a number of loving nursing homes in large and medium-sized cities that provide professional nursing services for the elderly. Lin Yuan immediately studied this proposal and reported it to the municipal party committee and municipal government, suggesting that the municipal foundation for the elderly raise funds to establish a caring nursing home.

The proposal was put forward, but where to raise more than 20 million yuan of construction funds? Where do renovation costs come from? Who will manage it when it is built? In order to solve these very real problems, Lin Yuan began to run around. Finally, the Municipal Foundation for the Elderly raised more than 38 million yuan from the society, which finally contributed to the preparation of the Municipal Caring Nursing Home.

Speaking of the original intention of founding the love nursing home, Lin Yuan once told reporters that his grandmother and father have been bedridden for many years due to stroke, and they understand the pain of the disabled elderly and the hardships of child care.

After the construction of the love nursing home, Lin Yuan proposed to learn from Shanghai's experience and entrust the operation and management of the First Hospital of the City, so that the elderly can receive professional and timely medical treatment through the model of combining medical care and nursing care. The love nursing home has created a new model of the city's social charity organization to set up a nursing home for the elderly, and it has been difficult to find a bed in less than 3 years. On January 22 last year, the renovation and expansion project of the Caring Nursing Home was launched, adding 380 beds to the original 300 beds.

During the construction of the project, Lin Yuan visited the construction site many times to help solve the problem. His daughter Lin Ying said that she could not see the completion of the renovation and expansion project of the Love Nursing Home, which was her father's most regrettable thing.

Journalist's Note

He was serious all his life

Lin Yuan's daughter Lin Ying said that her father had been working all his life and was particularly serious about doing things. Even at home, he always thinks about work. Not long ago, when Lin Yuan's old comrade-in-arms visited him in the hospital, he also said that he did not understand life and would only work in his life.

Lin Ying said that after his father fell ill, his feet and calves were swollen badly, but he still insisted on walking around and exercising with the help of a pedometer every day. A few days ago, the doctor asked the family to record Lin Yuan's daily physical condition in detail, and the children were worried about the old man's physical weakness and did not want to toss him too much. At that time, Lin Yuan, who was already speechless, asked for paper and pen and struggled to write down 9 words: be serious, be serious. Lin Ying said that his father particularly emphasized the word "serious", which is also the family training he left for his children.

The reporter has visited the families of the elderly in difficulty with Lin Yuan many times, and although he has undergone heart implantation stent surgery, although his legs and feet are inconvenient, he still does it himself, which is particularly touching. In September 2016, a few days after Typhoon Moranti, lin yuan, 88 years old, rushed to the disaster site to discuss solutions after hearing that the water pipes and pools of the "Happiness Hospital" in Wufeng Village, Tong'an, which were aided by the Foundation for the Elderly, had been damaged. Seeing him struggling on the mountain road, the entourage came forward to help, and he kept saying "it's okay, I can."

Every year during the Chongyang Festival, Lin Yuan visits villages and towns outside the island to visit and comfort the elderly in difficulty. Some of the elderly people who were assisted saw Lin Yuan, who was older than themselves, and were both surprised and moved. An old man living alone in Xiang'an held his hand tightly and burst into tears.

From the establishment of the Xiamen Municipal Foundation for the Elderly, the preparation of the Xiamen Love Nursing Home, the creation of the Xiamen Municipal Database of the Disabled Elderly, until the 89-year-old left office and still cared about the work of the Foundation, Lin Yuan did all this, he once told reporters: I just did what should be done, and it is also what I like to do.
