Wu Jie: Let the "seed spirit" illuminate the journey of life

author:Jingchu.com

On the morning of September 25, 2017, Professor Zhong Yang, dean of the Graduate School of Fudan University and botanist, was in a car accident on a business trip to Ordos City, Inner Mongolia, and died young. Professor Zhong Yang has been away from us for half a year, but he has insisted on climbing the roof of the world for 16 years to overcome difficulties such as altitude sickness and pick up tens of thousands of seeds. Laying the foundation for his seed kingdom, he completed the mission of seeding one seed after another

16 years ago, Zhong Yang set foot on the "third pole" of the earth alone, taking stock of the biological resources of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and exploring the trajectory of biological evolution. "Of course people who study biology should go to Tibet, there are at least 2,000 species of endemic plants on the Tibetan Plateau, and that's where every botanist should go," he said. Soon, Tibet became a fertile land for his scientific research, and at the same time became a home for his service and dedication. In 2010, Zhong Yang became the sixth batch of cadres selected by the Central Organization Department to aid Tibet. Three years later, he applied to remain in the seventh batch of cadres aiding Tibet. In 2016, after the expiration of the 3-year period, due to the critical juncture of the construction of relevant disciplines of Tibet University, he resolutely applied for retention again after recovering from a serious illness. In the face of organizational concern and concern about his physical condition, he repeatedly said that there was no problem, and also went to the hospital for a physical examination at his own expense, and finally was selected into the eighth batch of cadres to aid Tibet with the physical examination report and personal repeated struggle. It is precisely because of his persistence and unswerving dedication that unknown seeds have appeared in people's field of vision, been understood by people, and made outstanding contributions to other disciplines such as medicine in China and even the world

"Any life has an end to it, but I'm not afraid. Because my students will continue the road of scientific exploration; and the seeds we collect may sprout in a certain day hundreds of years later, and at that time, I don't know how many people's dreams will be fulfilled..." Professor Zhong Yang practiced his original intention of aiding Tibet with actions, from going into the classroom to impart knowledge, to overcoming difficulties, walking into the thorny bushes at the foot of the snowy mountains, walking at least 30,000 kilometers a year, using limited life to cultivate more plateau botany talents for the country and realize the value of his life

A gene can save a country, and a seed can benefit thousands of people. It is this perseverance that Zhong Yang led his team to collect 40 million seeds of thousands of plants on the roof of the world, trained the first Tibetan doctor of botany, applied for the first doctoral program in ecology for Tibet University, and achieved a breakthrough of zero in the National Natural Science Foundation of Tibet University. He had commendable character, a tenacious will, and a profound knowledge, and because he was a great sower. Professor Zhong Yang braved all kinds of difficulties and dangers, did not hesitate to go deep into the plateau, only to study the "seeds", in 16 years to visit the plants on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, collect seeds to send to the "Noah's Ark", and find the world's highest altitude Arabidopsis thaliana; he solved the problem of mangrove northward migration, sending a "beautiful coastline" to Shanghai 50 years later.

"The sky has not left a trace of a bird, and I have flown over". A black backpack, a faded rolled-brimmed hat, a green shirt, a smile, this is the last impression he left on people. Although he is gone, his contribution to the cause of science, his exploration in the Seed Ark, will continue

"Meritorious service, extensive and diligent work." As a reserve cadre rooted in the grassroots, although we do not have to walk on the snowy mountains and walk through thorns to overcome altitude sickness to meet many difficulties, we must have the spirit of perseverance and hard exploration in Professor Zhong Yang, give play to the resilience of a grassroots cadre, and sink our hearts in our work, aim high, know shame and ask good questions, and study with an open mind. With a sincere and innocent heart, do the best things for the villagers and benefit the people. Let our limited lives shine in the journey of a short life.
