Dozens of polar bears "invaded" Russia's Novaya Zemlya Island and entered a state of emergency
Authorities on Russia's novaya zemlya island in the Arctic Sea have now declared a state of emergency after dozens of polar bears "invaded" homes and public buildings, according to Agence France-Presse.
Alexander Minayev, an official at SHKP, reported to local authorities that since December, 52 polar bears have regularly broken into Belushya Guba, the main habitat of Sing terrestrial island, and that some of the bears have engaged in attacks, including attacking people, homes and public buildings.
Russia lists polar bears as endangered animals and prohibits their hunting. There are about 3,000 residents on Novaya Zemlya island in northeastern Russia, and the local authorities are called on to help deal with the problem of the large number of polar bears "invading" the residential area. Russian authorities have banned the shooting of polar bears, but will send a committee to investigate the situation on the ground and will not rule out culling.
Global warming has caused the Arctic sea ice to melt, and polar bears have been forced to change their predation habits and spend more time traveling to land in search of food. (Old Ren)
