The story of the film takes place about 60 years before the first part of The Lord of the Rings, the prequel to the Lord of the Rings, the protagonist is Frodo's uncle Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings, telling the story of the wizard Gandalf and the organization of 13 dwarves, including Baggins, marching towards the lonely mountains of the far east in order to retake the dwarven kingdom occupied by the evil dragon Smaug.
