North Korean lieutenant Choi Man-so and second-class soldier Jeong Woo-jin were killed on the spot, and the suspect who killed them was South Korean sergeant Lee So-hyuk.
In the shootout, he was shot in the right leg and dragged his injured leg to the "Bridge of No Return", triggering a fierce exchange of fire between the two Koreas.
The witness at the scene was North Korean sergeant Wu Jingbi, who was also shot in the right shoulder.
To avoid further escalation of tensions, both sides agreed to have the United Nations send experienced Swiss and Swedish judicial officials to the DPRK under the agreement to establish a neutral-power monitoring commission to investigate.
The members of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission included Investigator Sophie Jang from Switzerland and Captain Perssen from Sweden.
During the investigation, Lee So-hyuk and Wu Jingbi each wrote a confession.
Lee So-hyuk's confession goes like this:
That night, he ran to the outdoor grass to solve the problem because of the internal emergency, but was arrested by the North Korean soldiers and taken to the North Korean sentry. He took advantage of his lack of preparation to untie the rope tied to his hand, grabbed the gun and shot two people before escaping from the post.
Wu Jingbi's confession was as follows:
Lee So-hyuk sneaked into the North Korean sentry post and took out his pistol and shot two people, and he himself was shot and injured.
The public said that the public was justified, and the mother said that the mother was reasonable, and the investigation fell into a "Rashomon"-like stalemate for a while.

He found a total of 11 bullet holes in the bodies of the three North Korean soldiers who were killed and wounded, but only 10 warheads at the scene.
More critically, the M-9 pistol used by the shooter Lee So-hyuk was not his own, but the gun of his comrade-in-arms, Second Class Soldier Nam Sung-sik, which can be judged that there should also be Nam Sung-sik at the scene at that time.

In the same year, on February 17, during a mountain drill by a Rok-rok patrol, Lee So-hyuk was separated from the team by stepping on a landmine by mistake.
While he was helpless, he met North Korean soldiers Oh Kyung-bi and Jeong Woo-jin who came out to find the puppy.
Wu Jingbi helped Lee So-hyuk remove the mines and gave him the fuse as a small gift.
Since then, the three of them have begun to contact each other, often writing letters to communicate, exchanging ideas and forming a deep friendship.
Once, in a correspondence with Lee So-hyuk, Jeong Woo-jin half-jokingly invited Lee So-hyuk to a gathering at the North Korean sentry post, and Lee So-hyuk boldly invited them, and from then on they often gathered in the basement of the sentry post.
Soon Lee So-hyuk also pulled his subordinate Nam Sung-sik in, and the four of them drank and played, playing every night until they were not drunk, but they were as frightening as dancing on the blade.
This kind of relationship like walking on thin ice is not strong, and it will collapse in an instant when it is slightly affected by external forces.
Later, due to the reasons of the DPRK's nuclear test, the situation between the DPRK and the ROK fell into tension, and the military operations in Panmunjom became more and more frequent.
At this time, the time for Lee So-hyuk to retire from the army is approaching, and all four realize that their friendship is coming to an end.
On the evening of October 27, the four people met for the last time, and after drinking they exchanged souvenirs and exchanged correspondence addresses.
Just as the party was nearing its end, Lieutenant Choi Man-so suddenly opened the door and entered the sentry, and the atmosphere in the sentry instantly froze.
A burst of gunfire and four shots at each other broke the silence of the night, and the sentry was momentarily plunged into chaos.
Lieutenant Choe Man-so and Jeong Woo-jin were killed, and Lee So-hyuk and Nam Sung-sik quickly fled the scene after being injured in the right leg, triggering a border exchange.
The truth of the incident was unraveled one by one.
Nam Sung-sik attempted suicide by jumping off a building, but has been paralyzed ever since; Lee So-hyuk also committed suicide by drinking bullets because of guilt, and this friendship across borders ended in tragedy.
But for the dead Lee So-hyuk, he didn't regret all this, because he always thought of his actions:
The two Koreas are people with the same blood and should have come together.
In order to put an end to the sad and humiliating history of the Korean Peninsula, they are "opening the door to reunification", although a little afraid, but there is a kind of pride from the heart.

At the time of filming the film, Park Chan-wook was a hairy director, and only after the release of two films, "The Moon is a Dream Made by the Sun" and "Trio", this bold attempt was made.
