Qingdao Ecological Environment Monitoring Center of Shandong Province strengthens the monitoring and research of marine biodiversity to provide technical support for high-level protection of the ecological environment

Editor's note: On October 25, China Environment Daily, with the title of "Strengthening Marine Biodiversity Monitoring and Research to Provide Technical Support for High-level Protection of the Ecological Environment", reported on the advanced deeds of Qingdao Ecological Environment Monitoring Center in Shandong Province in conscientiously implementing the strategy and action plan of biodiversity conservation in Shandong Province, actively carrying out marine biodiversity monitoring and research, and contributing To the construction of a harmonious and beautiful Shandong.

On October 15, the 2020 United Nations Biodiversity Conference Ecological Civilization Forum closed in Kunming, Yunnan. Qingdao Ecological Environment Monitoring Center of Shandong Province (hereinafter referred to as "Qingdao Monitoring Center") actively responded to the initiative of "protecting biodiversity and jointly building a global ecological civilization" issued by this forum, led by Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization, conscientiously implemented the strategy and action plan for biodiversity conservation in Shandong Province, actively carried out monitoring and research on marine biodiversity, did a solid job in key work, found out the bottom number of marine biodiversity conservation, tracked the dynamic trend of change, and widely publicized the knowledge of biodiversity conservation. With practical actions, Qingdao contributes to the monitoring force of Qingdao to build a beautiful Shandong that is harmonious with all things.

Lay a solid foundation And actively carry out surveys and monitors of marine biodiversity

Marine biodiversity is an important indicator of the health of marine ecosystems and reflects the complex relationships between marine life and their environment. Cui Wenlian, deputy director of the Qingdao Monitoring Center, told reporters: "According to the characteristics of Qingdao's coastal waters and the needs of marine biodiversity environmental protection, we have laid out monitoring points in the city's main sea areas and 4 important intertidal areas, and regularly carry out special monitoring of marine plankton, benthic organisms and intertidal organisms every year." Through comprehensive analysis of monitoring, the degree of marine biodiversity and the richness and uniformity of species in Qingdao are evaluated, the current status of marine life is clarified, and rich monitoring data is provided for the protection of marine ecological environment. ”

Take the biodiversity monitoring of Jiaozhou Bay in Qingdao as an example: during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, more than 160 species of marine phytoplankton were detected in the Jiaozhou Bay area, of which the main species were diatom phylum, and the dominant species mainly included algae, bone stripe algae, round sieve algae, etc. There are more than 100 species of large marine zooplankton, mainly planktonic larvae, jellyfish and copepods, and the dominant species mainly include strong arrowworms, true prickly lip fleas, and short-tailed flea larvae. There are more than 230 species of benthic organisms, of which the main species are link animal phylum, arthropod phylum and mollusk phylum, and the dominant species are mainly sand silkworms, heteromorphic worms, And filipino clams. The monitoring data shows that in recent years, the level of biodiversity in the waters of Jiaozhou Bay has increased significantly, the community structure has improved, and the quality of habitats has steadily improved.

Support decision-making Do a solid job in scientific research on marine biodiversity

Marine biodiversity directly reflects the richness of marine species, through research can understand the operation mechanism of marine ecosystems, grasp the quality of seawater, water body trophic levels, substrate pollution and ecological status, to provide a reliable basis for decision-making for marine ecological environmental protection. Wang Yanling, senior engineer of Qingdao Monitoring Center, introduced: "We conduct three phases of monitoring of the water quality status of the city's coastal waters every year, and carry out large-scale environmental monitoring of marine, coastal zones, coastal wetlands and other ecosystems through satellite remote sensing and geographic information, and timely grasp the changes in the habitat area of marine organisms in key sea areas." ”

Under the long-term combined effects of climate change and human activities, marine biodiversity has changed or is undergoing certain changes. "We must not only monitor the changes in marine biodiversity, but also pay attention to the indicative role of changes in sensitive species and functional taxa on the ecological environment." Zhang Xiaohong, engineer of Qingdao Monitoring Center, said: "In recent years, Qingdao Monitoring Center has comprehensively done a good job in the analysis and research of the diversity of marine species with local characteristics, successively organized a special survey based on the biological quality and marine sediments of Jiaozhou Bay, selected 3 shellfish species such as clams in Qingdao sea area to carry out pollutant residue status investigation, and interpreted the environmental quality status of sediments through 11 monitoring indicators, and used environmental DNA macro barcoding technology to study the diversity of phytoplankton communities in Jiaozhou Bay. Subcellular structure analysis and identification of some tropical northward migrating plankton species were carried out by scanning electron microscopy technology, and the law of marine indicator species responding to climate change was scientifically analyzed, providing technical support for the protection of marine biodiversity. ”

Focus on monitoring Effectively promote public participation in marine biodiversity conservation

To strengthen the conservation of marine biodiversity, public participation is the guarantee. The Qingdao Monitoring Center gives full play to the positive role of the provincial environmental education base in the protection of the marine ecological environment, carefully processes and produces the representative marine biological specimens collected in the investigation of biological and intertidal biodiversity in the coastal waters for 40 years, re-planning and layout the original herbarium, and builds a new marine biological specimen room, so that the precious marine biological specimens can be effectively protected. By organizing public open activities, widely publicizing the knowledge of marine biodiversity conservation, condensing the strength of all sectors of society, and jointly promoting the protection of Qingdao's marine ecological environment, the concept of "green water and green mountains are golden mountains and silver mountains" is deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.

Liu Xudong, an engineer at the Qingdao Monitoring Center, said: "The Marine Biological Specimen Room has collected more than 500 specimens including shellfish, crustaceans, polychaetes, echinoderms, coelenterates, brachiopods, fish and large algae, covering the common marine and benthic types in the coastal waters and intertidal zones of Qingdao. On the basis of collecting and classifying, we will carry out in-depth processing of more than 200 representative marine specimens, comprehensively use lighting, spatial scenery and other means to strengthen the display effect of specimens, and comprehensively display the regional characteristics and rich types of marine life in Qingdao. ”

Strengthen the conservation of biodiversity and jointly build a better home for mankind. "Kunming Declaration" for the global biodiversity conservation work pointed out the direction of struggle, in the future marine biodiversity monitoring and research work, Shandong Province Qingdao Ecological Environment Monitoring Center will always adhere to Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization as the guide, on the basis of doing a good job of daily biodiversity monitoring, comprehensively improve the level of biodiversity research, scientifically support the protection and governance of the ecological environment, tell the blue story of Qingdao's marine development and protection, and make greater contributions to the realization of "harmonious coexistence between man and nature"!
