Overseas network on June 11, the British Imperial College of Technology recently issued a statement saying that the school will give up the use of the Latin school motto that has been printed on the school logo since 1908, because the school motto is not in line with the current culture and values.

Imperial College wrote on its official website that "the school's motto "Scientia imperii decus et tutamen" (used since 1908) means that science is the glory and patronage of the Empire. We recognize that this motto is related to colonialism and imperialism in British history. We do not deny that history, nor do we define it. We will renew the school emblem in 2020 and will no longer use this motto or reuse it on any materials. This is to better reflect the school's culture and values, as well as its commitment to supporting the building of diverse and inclusive communities. ”

The website statement explained that Imperial College could stop using the motto, but not rewrite it at will. Unlike most universities, Imperial College's Latin motto was awarded to the university after it was accredited by the British Crown in 1908. This means that Imperial College may choose not to display this motto again, but not unilaterally change or rewrite it. The introduction of the new school motto will require the Queen to issue a new royal accreditation and pass the approval of the Academy of Heraldry. (Overseas Network Zhang Min)
