In the flower shop above the market, we can often see cacti, and we can also see cacti in the desert, and the cactus introduced to you today is different from all other cacti, rare and charming.
Located in northwestern Mexico and near California, this rare and fascinating cactus looks like a fleshy caterpillar from a distance, which is terrifying for many people who get goosebumps when they see mollusks, but it is actually a cactus covered in a "caterpillar skin".
This caterpillar-like cactus is called the "New Green Pillar Caterpillar", also known as the "Reptilian Devil", and unlike most species of cacti, it usually grows vertically toward the sky, with their stems lying flat on the ground, with only the tip slightly raised.
In the cool oceanic climate of southern California Sur, crawling devil cacti grow rapidly at rates of up to 2 feet per year, forming intractable territories when prickly stems come together. In dry climates, the growth rate of this cactus drops to only 2 feet per 10 years.
Due to the lack of honey, pollen and other communication media, "creeping devils" mainly rely on their own replication methods to carry out asexual reproduction, when they develop in the desert parallel to the ground, the stem will begin to take root towards the growth end, once fixed on the sand, the old stem will wither, rot, and finally become the fertilizer for the growth of the new stem, which is really a big "strange thing" in the plant kingdom.
Despite their special habits, they are now in danger of extinction, and they could live to the age of 100 without human influence. What do you want to say about this "strange" plant? If you like our work, be sure to remember to like, share and follow!
