Rhino horn is considered an extremely precious medicinal herb in many countries, with the Arabs viewing it as a symbol of social hierarchy; in Yemen and Oman, rhino horn is used to make dagger handles for rituals. Prices on the black market once reached hundreds of thousands, so they also attracted crazy poachers. In 1993, the Chinese government issued a ban on the use of rhino horn. Although there are no wild rhinos in China (the last rhino in China was extinct in 1972 due to human hunting), no rhino species are listed as nationally protected animals. But as a member of the International Wild Trade Convention, China has consistently supported a ban on any rhino product trade.
