Passing on the Torch on Both Sides of the Strait -- Visiting Zhang Jianing, Director of the Department of Surgery of Tsinghua Chang Gung Hospital in Beijing

"Coming to the mainland to serve more patients"

Professor Zhang Jianing was trained in the plastic surgery industry in Taiwan Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, a famous family in the field of plastic surgery, under the tutelage of professor Chen Yurui, the world's top expert in jaw plastic surgery and former president of the International Association of Craniomaxillofacial Surgery, and successively served as the director of plastic surgery at Keelung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, the director of plastic surgery at the Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University in Taiwan, and the vice president of children's hospital. But she was far away from her homeland, went north alone, and chose to start from scratch on the new stage of Beijing Tsinghua Chang Gung Hospital, which was the motivation behind countless people's concern and curiosity. Professor Zhang Jianing was very indifferent to this: "My idea is actually very simple, that is, I want to come to the mainland to serve more patients." Doctors in Taiwan are relatively saturated, but there are still many patients on the mainland who need help. If nothing else, the population of Beijing alone is worth the entire population of Taiwan. ”

"Of course, I have another consideration. Although Beijing Tsinghua Changgeng Hospital is a newly built hospital with no foundation, it stands on the shoulders of two giants such as Tsinghua University and Chang Gung Hospital, so I am very confident that I will achieve another career in Beijing. ”

Professor Zhang Jianing liked the environment and atmosphere of the campus very much, so she gave up the dormitory of the hospital and lived on the campus of Tsinghua University. For life in Beijing, she laughs that her adaptability is comparable to that of Xiaoqiang, except for the uncomfortable climate in winter, the other seasons feel very good. "It's not that there is no resistance, in fact, the biggest resistance is the bondage of family affection, and my mother is particularly reluctant to let me leave." No way, only to go back and see it often. However, my teacher, Professor Chen Yurui, was very supportive and gave me a lot of encouragement and guidance. ”

"Drop a stone and make a ripple"

Speaking of his mentor, Professor Chen Yurui, Professor Zhang Jianing's face is always full of admiration and respect. She said that the influence of the teacher on her was all-round and subtle. She is also very proud to be one of the teacher's favorite students.

"The essence of Chang Gung culture, in fact, is not too fancy, it is very simple, do it for you to see." This is very much in line with Tsinghua University's motto of 'deeds speak louder than words'. Real gold is not afraid of fire, it is a mule is a horse, let's pull it out and walk it. For the undertaking that is unfolding in front of him, Professor Zhang Jianing seems relaxed and confident.

However, she frankly said that the huge differences between the two sides of the strait still surprised her and made her feel quite shocked. Taiwan's medical education model and medical service model are basically followed by the United States, relatively mature and perfect, and have a very systematic institutional guarantee for the cultivation of doctors. The situation on the mainland is diametrically opposed, the academic system of medical schools is chaotic, the awareness of clinical teachers to teach is weak, and the mentality of students is relatively impetuous, which leads to uneven levels of young doctors and difficulty in unifying many concepts.

"Ma Yun said that change is painful, but not changing is even more painful. So I'm going to do everything I can to change that, starting with little by little. The teacher told me that as long as a class can affect one or two students, it is successful, and these benign changes will be like a stone in the pond, a ripple, and it will expand and expand. ”

Professor Zhang Jianing believes that doctors are facing a complete person, not a simple disease, so a good doctor must have a solid foundation and extensive knowledge, and must undergo long-term and rigorous clinical rotation training. At Tsinghua Changgeng, the first thing she has to do is to institutionalize and standardize clinical rotation. As for the problem of the hospital's newly recruited resident doctors with different backgrounds, different academic qualifications, different academic systems, and different levels, she decided to start with the most basic trauma treatment in surgery and re-consolidate the foundation. At the same time, the training and management of clinical teachers will be strengthened to improve their teaching awareness. "Medicine must be passed on, and the torch must be passed on from our generation."

"I love being the terminator of the wandering patient"

When it comes to plastic surgery, many people first think of medical aesthetics, which are Korea and Japan. In this regard, Professor Zhang Jianing jokingly said, "We will not have so few things." ”

The scope of plastic surgery is actually very broad, including congenital or acquired defects of various tissues and organs such as skin, muscles, bones, etc., the repair and reconstruction of deformities, including trauma treatment, difficult wound treatment, burns, maxillofacial surgery, microsurgery, congenital malformation correction and other fields, medical aesthetics is only a small part of it. The plastic surgery department of Taiwan's Chang Gung Memorial Hospital is famous all over the world, and hundreds of doctors come from all over the world every year to study and study, including doctors from developed countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as doctors from neighboring Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea.

Professor Zhang Jianing, who has received complete training in Chang Gung Hospital, has very strong skills and amazing creativity. Plastic surgery faces a variety of patients, the solution is not defined, doctors must exert full imagination and creativity, according to the person and different places to develop a plan, in order to achieve the most ideal results. On the computer screen, the contrast between the before and after the treatment is breathtaking. However, what makes Professor Zhang Jianing most proud is that many of her patients are out to seek medical treatment, and they have been "wandering" for a long time, and finally got satisfactory results through her treatment.

As a plastic surgeon, you must also have a pair of eyes that find beauty. The patient comes to her aid with all sorts of congenital or acquired defects, and she must tap into the potential of beauty beneath the surface of the defects. "To be a good plastic surgeon, the art of communication is very important. In fact, we all know that from the heart, sometimes confident eyes are better than everything. All I can do is be a terminator and let patients regain their confidence. ”

"Solving practical problems facing the clinic"

Since graduating in 1990, Professor Zhang Jianing has presided over 30 scientific research projects and published more than 40 papers in SCI journals, maintaining high productivity and efficiency. This achievement has been greatly admired by many of her peers, but she feels that it is a natural output. "The clinician's job is to solve the problems facing the clinic. When I encounter a complex case, I try my best to come up with the most ideal solution to treat, get satisfactory results, and then share it with my peers around the world and get their approval, this is a paper, it is not difficult. Professor Zhang Jianing said very modestly, but the ubiquitous flash of wisdom in the article is difficult to hide.

In the field of stem cell and regenerative medicine that Professor Zhang Jianing is good at, she also adheres to the starting point of solving clinical problems and engages in scientific research work, rather than simply explaining a clinical phenomenon. While in Taiwan, she has applied growth factor stimulation therapy to treat male hair loss, complex wounds, and diabetic feet. Coming to Tsinghua University, with a group of top colleagues engaged in stem cell and regenerative medicine basic research, Professor Zhang Jianing can't wait to further deepen the previous research results and serve the clinic faster and better.

The joining of Professor Zhang Jianing is not only the result of the strong cooperation between Tsinghua University and Taiwan's Chang Gung, but also the epitome of cross-strait medical exchanges and integration. She came with a passion to pass on the torch of medicine.
