Beijing, September 26 (Reporter Zhang Ni) Statistics show that in 2020, the number of new cases of colorectal cancer in China exceeded 550,000, and in China, the proportion of young people with disease is high.
Because of its slow development, colorectal cancer is often referred to as the most "stupid" cancer. But why are new cases of this cancer on the rise? How can it be effectively prevented? A few days ago, at a science popularization kick-off meeting held in Beijing, industry experts gave the answer.

In 2020, the number of new cases of colorectal cancer in China exceeded 550,000
On the 25th, the Colorectal Tumor Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and the Colorectal Cancer Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association launched the first domestic colorectal cancer "anti-screening diagnosis and treatment of nursing tube" full chain of science popularization in Beijing (referred to as "science popularization China trip"). The event was supported by the Chinese Electronic Journal of Colorectal Diseases and co-organized by Nuohui Health.
According to the latest cancer database data of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the new cases of colorectal cancer in China have increased from 388,000 in 2015 to 555,000 in 2020, which is climbing rapidly at a rate of 7.4% per year.
China has become the country with the largest number of new cases of colorectal cancer in the world. Moreover, the incidence of colorectal tumors is showing a younger trend.
Wang Xishan, chairman of the Colorectal Tumor Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and director of the Colorectal Surgery Department of the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, introduced at the meeting that according to the latest statistics of the National Cancer Center, the number of new colorectal cancer in China accounts for 9.9% of all new malignant tumors, and the proportion of young people with rectal cancer is relatively high, accounting for about 10%-15%.

The most "stupid" cancer can be prevented?
Because the development period is slow, which can last up to 8-10 years, colorectal cancer is often referred to as the most "stupid" cancer.
Yang Jin, deputy editor-in-chief of the People's Medical Publishing House, said that colorectal cancer is one of the few cancers that can be prevented, and it is also the cancer with the most screening value and the most that should be screened.
But in China, early screening for colorectal cancer is not ideal.
According to the survey on the diagnosis and treatment status of short-term and medium-term colorectal cancer patients in China, 85% of patients do not understand the knowledge of early screening of colorectal cancer, 97% of colorectal patients have not undergone colonoscopic screening, and 83% of patients with newly diagnosed and confirmed colorectal cancer are in the middle and advanced stages.
"When people in China have no symptoms or don't feel uncomfortable, they don't have a physical examination or screening. The professional team of doctors also has the misunderstanding of not knowing when to use what technology to screen. Li Zhaoshen, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the Department of Gastroenterology of the First Affiliated Hospital of the Naval Military Medical University (Shanghai Changhai Hospital), said.
Wang Xishan also stressed the importance of early screening at the meeting. He said the families of bowel cancer patients are also at high risk. According to the NCCN Guidelines for Colorectal Cancer Screening and the Guidelines for Early Diagnosis and Early Treatment of Colorectal Cancer in China (2020, Beijing), the family of colorectal cancer patients should be screened at the age of onset 10 years earlier, or start screening at the age of 40.
During the kick-off meeting, Wang Xishan also announced for the first time a prospective, multi-center screening verification study for the family of colorectal cancer (spouses and first-degree family members). The project is led by the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and carried out in conjunction with 11 research centers across the country, aiming to provide a practical screening path for high-risk populations in real clinical scenarios to participate in early screening of bowel cancer.
The reporter learned at the meeting that the "Science Popularization China Tour" will build a colorectal cancer science education base around public medical institutions, and provide timely and effective accurate science popularization for colorectal cancer patients, their families and related high-risk groups. The project plans to establish 100 science popularization bases covering hospitals at all levels in provinces, cities and counties across the country by the end of 2022, train 300 science popularization talents, and carry out 2,000 science popularization activities.
